STL-P – The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix
“My music is loud, noisy and pushes you into introspection.”
STL-P formerly know as Estelle P is a versatile DJ and activist, crafting a distinctive blend of industrial all the way through to spiritual dance music, navigating through techno, electro, bass, trance, and progressive – yup that’s a lot to get into one cohesive whole.
Estelle is also the founder of “Cahiers Électroniques,” a non-profit organisation hosting parties in France. Her influence extends to the airwaves through the ‘Hold-Up’ radio show on Rinse France where she invites international artists and friends
This mixtape showcases her versatile approach to things but concentrates on the harder edge of her sound.
Listen below:
Who are you: I’m STL-P (aka Estelle P). I’m a dj, founder of the French organisation Cahiers Électroniques and I produce music also.
Where are you: I’m based in Paris
What are you: Woman
What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
My music is loud, noisy and pushes you into introspection. Sometimes, I choose tunes more spiritual and groovy but it’s not the case for this mix. I would like to select something which sounds like steel.
How does your brain work when making music? how does it work when you aren’t?
Sometimes, I can select a motif, a word and describe it during one hour. My mixes can be conceptual and intellectual.
But most of the time, my music is instinctive.. Without music my brain is always into words and when I make music it is like a long meditation.
What was the first electronic record you heard and how did it make you feel?
I don’t remember the first tracks that I heard but I remember that I heard “Aux 88 ” or “Drexciya” young and fell in love with electronic music. I never heard a song like this before. I would love to learn more about the history, rhythms and I started to collect records.
Where was the mix recorded?
At home 🙂 I used to record all my mixes in the club where I worked during the morning (8-11 AM) for years, but this one, I recorded it at home.
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
In the forest, for example, in a big space where you can be free.
What should we be wearing
Your favourite comfortable clothes in order to dance as much as possible.
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format.
I really love long sets – 3 or 4 hours. Outside, during the summer, with a special view and a perfect soundsystem. In the middle of the forest is not so bad also.
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
Escándaloo by Verraco from the Voam label. I love Blawan and Pariah univers. I was lucky to play in a party before Blawan recently. I’m really grateful for this because he has been an inspiration for me for a long time. Verraco is a producer from Colombia. Sick dj and producer. You should check it out.
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
I have listened to so many mixes so it’s impossible to select one. I just listened to a Donato Dozzy and Batu set recorded at the Draaimolen festival. I was at the festival this summer with my friends. This B2B wasn’t announced and when we discovered Donato Dozzy and Batu on stage, we stayed until the end. I already knew both very well. This mix is a masterpiece.
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
DJ Deeon because of ghetto house. Then, Dj Mehdi for his art of sampling in his Hip Hop/Rap productions & his skills in electronic music.
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
First, I started with : 2 Technics Mk2 + Xone 23.
Then, I bought : 2 CDJs 350 + Xone 92 and I still had my technics mk2.
And now, I just bought 2 XDJs 1000 to replace cdj 350 2 weeks ago. Now it’s: 2 Technics Mk2, Xone 92 + 2 xdjs 1000.
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
For a long time, I was pretty bad with first tracks and now, it’s the first thing that I think when I record a mix.
What were the first and last records you bought?
I don’t remember the name of the EP, just the cover. It was a techno record bought in Ibiza in 2014/2015. I just bought old trance from 90’s (second hand record) at Dizonord, Paris.
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
Ginger
google définition : What does ginger taste like? Ginger has a spicy flavour, and an invigorating aroma. It produces a warming and fiery taste that gives an unmistakable and comforting kick. Ginger tastes spicy because of its chemical composition, specifically the compound gingerol, which creates its hot sensation.
If it was an animal what would it be?
Scorpio as I am 🌞
