After being available on 12" for a month or so, the latest in the Motor City Drum Ensemble 'Raw Cuts' series has made it onto digital, and it couldn't have come sooner.
So often when records are described as 'tracky', it's nothing but a shameless euphemism for 'boring' – but on this EP's lead remix, Marcellus Pittman gives a masterclass in how to do tracky right. The secret is in the elements; a rough edged kick drum, rattles of hi hat needling the margins, dusty organs driving along, pumping blood rhythm like blood, vocal wails sprawling across the beat, and everything switching up in tiny, funky increments, little steps that transmit straight to the feet. This is deep house in the original sense of the word, emotional, jazzy, intricate, and aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Proper.
