A carefully curated playlist from South London musician Tone.

Tone is perhaps best known for his involvement in the infamous South London Curl collective alongside Mica Levi, Coby Sey and Brother May. He has far reaching musical influences and his name might also ring a bell from the punk-duo, Farai.

More recently he has been working on his own solo material – music which has helped to guide him through a reformation as he became a father. His new album was written during the pregnancy of his daughter and subsequently her birth.

As such he has chosen to curate a playlist based around the theme of change – be that lifestyle, identity, circumstances or otherwise.

He has picked music and visuals by friends and creatives who have influenced him over the year whilst demonstrating his extensive musical repertoire.

His album is out on the 4th of March and is titled ‘So I Can See You’.

Brother May - In For The Kill

My brother and collaborator Brother May, a force to be reckoned with. An incredible artist doing it his way, an inspiration and truly gifted. This video is made by a good friend and another amazing artist Akinola Davies Jr.

  • Tirzah - Send Me

Tirzah is a good friend of mine and I helped shoot this video for their amazing album that came out recently on Domino records. Incredible work as always with Mica Levi on production. I resonate a lot with the simplicity of the music and directness of the lyrics. Something I strive for in my work.

  • Coby Sey - All Change

Coby as well as one of my closest friends is also one of my favourite artists. Creates deep worlds with his music, mantras that you get lost in driven with really interesting diverse textures and beautiful melodies.

  • Good Sad Happy Bad - Shades

I had the pleasure to shoot this video for the band Good Sad happy Bad. They are all good friends as well as my wife being in the band. They wanted something that reflected the brightness of the track and we just played around with the exposure settings on the cameras to get this bleached out effect and spent a lovely day in the park.

  • A Guy Called Gerald , Voodoo Ray Live at Victoria Baths 1988

As a teen in the early 2000s I got massively into electronic music, I bought turntables and spent all my money on records. I was drawn to all the electronic music that came out of Manchester in the 80/90s and this is just a great moment of a guy called Gerald along with Graham Massey from 808 state playing a pool party which was televised on Tony Wilson’s The Other Side Of Midnight aired on ITV in 1988

  • DJ Spanish Fly - Cement Shoes

DJ Spanish Fly the Memphis mythological legend, this is just a great track, mellow and funny, rough round the edges and DIY, just how I like it.

  • Downtown 81 Clip - New York Is My Kind of Town

Big fan of Jean Michel Basquiat and of this film Downtown 81. An insight into Downtown New York during an incredible fruitful time for the city. Punk, New wave, HipHop and Jazz colliding and creating art like the world had never seen.

  • The Beautiful South - Song For Whoever

A great British northern band that my parents use to have the CDs of when I was growing up and I got really into them as a teen, which I never told my mates about at the time but now I’m older can happily say I really dug this album, the songwriting and playfulness to subject matters and the quirky UK humour.

  • Scott Walker - It's Raining Today

Big Scott Walker fan, my favourite album being Scott 3 which this is from. This performance with a live orchestra is incredible.

  • Prince - 17 Days (Piano & A Microphone 1983 Version)

What can I say… Prince….the absolute GOAT. This recording is from his vault. Apparently just set up the mic, did a half an hour jam to cassette tape and chucked it in a closest. The kind of work artists dream of being able to achieve and just created on a whim. I love the bare bones sound. And the lofi quality of the cassette. Just so good.

  • Notebook On Cities And Clothes Trailer

Great documentary by the film-maker Wim Wenders following the Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and his process.
