Space Is The Place with Red Greg
This is the first in a new feature series in which we invite musicians, artists, djs and producers to explore music in the context of space. The two have been intrinsically linked and many an artist has attempted to recreate the thematic elements of the solar system through their music. From Jeff Mills to Sun Ra, Underground Resistance to Joe McPhee – many have tried to embody the nature of the stars, planets and the cosmos through instrumentation, electronics and sound. The result is an intricate tapestry with endless ideas.
Red Greg is a DJ with an interesting history – raised in East London he began amassing an interest in music and dj's after listening mixtapes in the early 80's. He became an avid record collector and drew influence from a wide array of music and sound system culture. From disco to funk and soul, house and acid to rare groove his tastes have evolved and meandered over time.
In the present day he is an active disc jockey and plays a key role in Melodies Intl. family – the record label run by Floating Points and Mafalda. His sets are wide and diverse, channeling an abstract array of elements and thematic concepts by which you might not stereotypically realise.
In this instance he has chosen an assortment of records all of which feature the thematic influence of space and the cosmos. Be this through style, lyrics, sound or name.

Red Greg will play as part of a special event at Printworks on Friday 4th of October. More details HERE.
For 1984 this record ticks all the right boxes for me, super soulful with all the right ingredients musically and it could shoot anyone out in space, when played on the right sound system, at the right time. Coming out of NYC, I’m quite surprised it wasn’t a hit there, as it has Paradise Garage written all over it.
