Space Is The Place: Wheelman
For a long, long time musicians have been referencing the outer reaches of our galaxy, infusing elements associated with the stars and the the great unknown beyond in their music left, right and centre. Space remains a key influence in the music of many, from dj’s to producers we have all at times been fascinated by sounds which remind us of unknown life amidst the planets and the stars…
However, in this instance the focus has been placed on the literal components of ‘space’. The defining ‘space’ between sounds themselves. A wholeheartedly interesting and unique take on this playlist.
Wheelman is the alias of Glasgow based producer and DJ Jonathan Fernandez, a much loved figure in the city’s dance and electronic music scene he has since gone on to launch his own label, Stereotone Records. The label originated in a regular party he throws at La Cheetah Club and has acted as a place to trial his own productions and bring life to his own music. Jonathan has previously released music via the likes of Studio Barnhus, Don’t Be Afraid and Belters. However, earlier this month he announced a compilation of his own material via his new label. Grab that HERE.
We asked him to talk tracks and he obliged in fine style…
“In the early dubstep days I remember hearing a (my memory’s not the best but I think) Mala interview about how the space in the music is as important as any other element. That always stuck with me as an idea and rings true with a lot of my favourite music. I just released an EP called Box Of Tricks where I tried to explore this idea in some of the music as well so I thought it would be a nice time to share a handful of tracks that make a great use of space in music according to me.”

One of a bunch of great new release’s TTT have dropped over the past few months, this track has a lazy-evening summer-heat feel. Gently audible background noise and delicate elements all take their own place in the mix leaving plenty of room around them to breath. A beauty.
