Influences: Jonny Rock

Music

From time to time you are struck by a personality which offers such warmth and enthusiasm that it can be hard not be caught up in the magic of it all. However, Jonny Rock has as much talent as he does have charisma and is arguably one of the nicest people in electronic music. With far reaching tastes, inspired tales and a lot of mischief to boot he has helped channel a new wave of musicality which see's disc jockeys draw for the abstract, the obscure and the original. As a dj he is unrivalled with many looking to him as a pivotal figure amidst the community.

For those who have ever had the pleasure of watching Jonny DJ you will know that he has the capability to meander through a whimsical journey spanning the breadths of Middle Eastern influences, classic house, dub, disco, soul, funk and beyond. No holds barred – free spirited and free flowing, his sets can be ANYTHING.

Towards the tail end of last year he released a two track EP on ESP Institute, the longstanding label run by Lovefingers. A hard hitting techno affair and a testament to the variation in style.

Across the course of Jonny's career he has built up a keen circle of familiar faces and friends, each with as much passion for music as himself – the list below is a homage to this. In his own words…

"Instead of the razmatazz and jazz lp's while I was in my nappies story, I wanted to talk about the influences i've had the pleasure in meeting, jamming along and hearing."

Lovefingers

I met him as he swam in a pool under the trees (before romantic dj dinners there was romantic dj swims but not many people know that) in Cesme, Turkey. A 2 day hangout led to rides through the scenic routes and an impromptu b2b of hippie jams which led to the foundation of hugz today. Potent innovative musical vision. From all tings electronique to the sound of tumble wind finger up yer love.

  • Tako

He popped round when I had a few peeps over for one of my cosmic meatball sessions with the signature tomato sauce. Foundation was set. Bond got stronger via what they call the web through years. Now any time whenever I hear him play or we jam it is an effortless dive into the the exquisite form of musical treats. I dance as I jam.

  • Rob Mello

One of ma favourite b2b jammers for hours. No genres spared. Was lucky to have all the noears exclusives to spice up my jams. Well…. till it stopped. Now whenever we jam, it’s noears edits versus rock edits. U r unlikely (and cosmically impossible) to hear these anywhere else.

  • Hunee

The music industry needs more beautiful people like Hunee. Positive energy all the way, loving every beat he plays. Not just a ‘digger’ but can fuse all sorts of genres like the bolshoi ballet in unique harmony.

  • Craig Richards

For me the trigger was one Sunday at dig your own rave at t-bar years. He’d just came back from Los Angeles visiting doc I think and I knew he dug deep there, just blew me away. Since then always challenging and exciting the boundaries of my ears.

  • Ricardo Villalobos

I feel he is like the grateful dead of dj’s in a way. Anyone that knows me (or the dead) knows this a bold statement. Total jammer. Only heard him a few times. Constantly taking risks, keeps pushing it to the limit.. It doesn’t work at all times, but when it does, wow.. what a bone, that’s the only time u will ever hear it like that. ‘When the music plays the band’ Magical and unique way of thinking. Houghton this year, 7am in the morning in the forrest is when I ‘heard’ him.

  • Crowdpleaser

I call him the other side of the medallion. My brother form Geneva. Creator of the magic club called ‘shark’ in Geneva. My no 1 spot worldwide and intergalactic. Me and g. boom. Nothing else to say. If u know u know.

  • Kenny Hawkes

RIP. Only influence here that is not with us anymore that I personally experienced the force of. The way he creeped up with moods on the dance floor. This is when Plastic People was Plastic People. Ogee spot on Oxford Street. Guess same 100 ears every Friday there, gave him the opportunity to grow with and explore. One of the best.

  • Luke Solomon

Been there for me since day one. Smooth operator in the studio when we work and a hammer jammer when he plays. Amount of great music I got exposed to through him is huuuge.

  • Baris K

Brother from the motherland. True self built artist with a mission. Original of the original. An inspiring searcher. Catch him if you can. anytime any place, would jam with him forever.

  • Vladimir Ivkovic

True gentleman. Kind soul. Opened so many new doors, windows and rabbit holes to my ears. New way of thinking. There was this one time he managed to put me to sleep in pure joy close to the decks while playing 140bpm trance. No energy left to walk 2 meters to go spot anything and believe me I wanted to. I had just let go of wanting to know, let my ears take it all in. Was like the musical blanket that comforted me.

  • Solar

San Francisco’s inimitable force. Had a few hours to kill b4 my flight, I heard him one afternoon, outside, at Cocktail party in Berlin. It was the first time since the days of Kenny Hawkes, i’d felt …freak it… I burn my ticket and listen to another hour of this. True class and a gentleman.

  • Paramida

Not sure why she is called (or calls herself) Berlin’s most hated as she is super sweet yet still wild. A true underground soldier with an impeccable taste on dance music and a stamina to play them for hours and hours and hours and hours…. Always a pleasure to hang out and listen to. Got a parajams folder in ma schtick to dive in when necessary.

  • Budino

Young gun. read what you like, hear what ever mix, but the force of Budino live on the dance floor is pure deep wonky hypnotic energy. She caught me when I was drained till my last breath but kept me on the dance floor when nothing else worked. Another occasion while dancing fresh I did close my eyes and smiled throughout. Go dance to her on sight.
