Music

How might you choose to capture a mood within a piece of music? Emotion within music is as independent as the individual who exists behind the sound.

Since 2012 Cass. has been producing beautifully crafted ambient music through the use of loops, strings, pianos and field recordings. His sound is often melancholic and enchanting. Earlier this year he released a collaborative album with Jan Schulte on International Feel, however, it is now at the tail end of 2016 that he enters his finest hour. The end of November will see him release a new album on Emotional Response. Elegantly crafted the album encapsulates a sound which has been reworked and developed across years, he is ready to take the next step. We talk to Cass. about his influences to date below…

Antonio D. Luca - Ascending A Staircase

Wonderful piece of music by my friend Antonio with a beautiful saxophone part by Leonhard Huhn from his LP „Musik Wozu“. Antonio and I first met in 2013 when he was playing at the European Media
Art Festival in my hometown. He was performing together with his Band ‚Colorist‘. Beautiful concert, beautiful people. They were standing in front of the stage, framed by the people – a really intense experience.

  • Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - "When I Try, I'M Full"

This is actually quite a recent find, but i’m sure that her work will have a huge impact on my music and the way i work on ideas in the future. I just had to include her music in this list, such a talented composer and synthesist. I saw and read a couple of interviews. Interesting way of working and i hope to see her performing live soon. The modular systems she’s using produce such a warm sound, fantastic!

  • Martial Canterel - Windscreen

A friend of mine came up with his music and showed me the video. This trancy wave vibe is definitely an inspiration. I’m actually watching this video regularly, just to keep in mind what’s possible in terms of live performance.

  • Krista - Space Tom Test

James Pants is the man! One of the most influential 7″ records i have. Don’t miss “Clouds over the pacific” aswell, perfect song. I bought this record around 2 years ago, no idea where it was. I think the record dealer recommended it.

  • Der Ringer - Kanada (Feat. Stella Sommer)

I wish that this german band would get more attention. There are not a lot of, especially german acts, who try to include the idea of a digitally-controlled society in their music.
I never met them in person yet, but their record release show was very good. I enjoyed watching them in hamburg, shout outs to Moritz came along to hang out there.

  • Oneohtrix Point Never - Along (Point Never Extended Version)

Infinity in time and space. I love the work of Daniel Lopatin because of this whole universe of musical aesthetic is far beyond most of the stuff going around. Beautiful version of „Along“. I was actually missing one of his live shows. I often think about the actual impossibility of performing these complex song structures live, without limiting oneself on pressing play.

  • John Maus - The Law

This is my favourite song by John Maus and i wish it would be longer. There was a time when i was exclusively listening this song and „Benneton“. I think in parts you can hear the impact on my new album.

  • Tim Hecker - The Piano Drop

Amazing album and possibly the reason why i started to use a tremolo again in my own recordings. I’m quite sure that Tim Hecker, Thomas Köner and Lusine ICL were the first experimental artists that i was listening too. I’m not too much into the new material he’s releasing, but this album is brilliant, especially as a concept. It’s funny to look-up the story behind it: „The Baker House Piano Drop is actually a combination of dorm spirit, harmless destructiveness, and the willingness to do something difficult just for the sake of doing it.“.

  • Lusine Icl - A Day Apart

I got in touch with Ghostly International quiet early. I know that ‚Language Barrier‘ has been released on Hymen, but i first listened to Lusine via Ghostly. I was listening to this album so often – in the car of my parents, in my room. I actually bought it on CD, i even can’t remember where it was. But i’m really thankful that i found this music.
