8 Tracks: Of Underrated Rave with Chris Moss Acid

The UK has always had a special hold upon electronic music, we've dug our talons in and haven't let go since. Rave and acid amidst the outback of the countryside, on the beaches and in the streets of Manchester and beyond. Chris Moss is a producer with a firm connection to the underbelly of the sound which gave birth to dance music as we know it. Inspired by the hedonistic days of rave and acid his sound draws upon elements of analogue and machine driven music. His releases blur the lines somewhat between the house focussed world of chicago and the fast paced revelry of UK warehouse culture.

His latest release on Balkan Vinyl is a throwback to the fast paced parties of the 90's… As described by the label…

"Where were you in '92? Not in Bournemouth, probably."

Traxmen - Caution [1994]

Plenty of 808 distorted driven tracks around but I kinda like this one, dirty cowbell. Does the business without being too stupid on the distortion. Also has the bonus of being really easy to mix into tracks.
Universal Indicator Red - Untitled 8 (One2)

Always been a big fan of UI. Timeless. Everyone’s had a go trying to make UI style tracks, even me, and we all fail. Still sounds fresh today as it did when it came out.

Groundbreaking. Nuff said. I love breaks this has it all.
Dillinja & Batmix - Tear Off Your Chest (D&B 1991)

Crazy goofy sample with lush bass and some perfect chopped beats. The beginning of something massive.
Urban Shakedown - Some Justice

Being a big fan of chopping up beats this just blew my mind when I heard it. Also this track set fire to a bassbin when I played it at a party in Bournemouth once. Amiga massive.
Technical Itch - Heavy Metal

Nice and heavy dnb but with rave samples. Love the bass.
Warped Kore - The Power (1993)

Much like the urban shakedown track. This track made me want to stick an amen break in everything, love the manipulation stratching that shit out. Also that portomento! should be named Porto mental. Love it. Heavy af! Key influence on my new EP.
