8 Tracks Of: Sci-fi Films with Krust

At the beginning of November, Bristolian trailblazer Krust released his first album in 14 years. The Edge Of Everything sees him return from his hiatus fully liberated, poised to take listeners on a transportive journey like no other.

It was about 12 years ago that Krust decided to take some time out. The 90s and 00s had been jam packed with acclaimed releases, projects and collaborations, which gained him recognition as an envelope pusher, unafraid of exploring new realms of jungle and drum and bass. On top of this, alongside collaborator and fellow producer Roni Size, he ran Full Cycle Records, which platformed artists from Bristol and beyond like Suv, DJ Die, Tali and Clips, as well as the label bosses.

Now, fully rejuvenated, Krust is back and firmly focused on crafting unique and authentic music. The Edge Of Everything meets that marker. The tracks, though identifiably Krust in sound, are freer, deeper, more intense and realised, but perhaps most notably they feel light years ahead of themselves.

He found inspiration in the likes of Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese to help him tell a sonic narrative across the release, so keeping that in mind he charts his favourite science-fiction films from the mid 80s right up to 2015…

Robocop (1987)

Classic film. A bit cheesy looking back on it now, it looks quite funny. How can they get away with the special effects? It all looks a bit rubbery. I remember seeing it as a kid and it was fresh brand-new half man half robot – a bit like the $6 million man. We can rebuild you better stronger faster. What’s it saying about Man’s abilities to cope with his environment?

Terminator 2 (2015)

When that film came out it was a milestone in special FX. It was another level, miles ahead. If you like the first one, this one is going to blow your mind. Arni with his one-liners and that deadpan look and the eerie soundtrack. Come with me if you want to live!! Still get excited!!
Blade (1998)

The film that started the Marvel super hero franchise. Wesley Snipes kicking ass as the Night Walker. Black vampire killer with deadly moves taking out whole armies of vampires. Yeah this film was the shit!! We see these super hero films all the time now, they’re common place, but Blade was way ahead of its time.
Demolition Man (1993)

The Second time we have Wesley Snipes in this list playing Simon Phoenix in the Demolition Man. This is a dope film, Wesley Snipes is so sick: his sense of humour, his martial art skills… Next level. You don’t want him to die and you wanna see part two because he’s so good!! Come on guys, where is part two? We wanna see Simon Phoenix rise again!!
Predator (1987)

Arnold Schwarzenegger at his best. This is one of the first films we saw back in 80s with that double ending — you think it’s over but it just keeps going. Arnold Schwarzenegger fighting the beast from out of space; classic 80s American movie. Fear what you don’t know!!! And just in case send in the Terminator. The predator that has laser guided rockets camouflage that we’ve never seen before in a film, just those eyes! Amazing stuff, so futuristic. I’ve seen the film about 20 times, still fresh as fuck. The epic shooting scene in the jungle, when they all line up shooting! “We hit nothing”
Total Recall (1990)

There was only one super hero making epic Sci-fi movies in the 80s and that was the big man Arnold. It was like he had the golden touch, every film he did was a blockbuster and Total Recall was a smasher. Storyline was epic, special FX were epic and Arni’s big arms — epic. If you haven’t seen this film go get it now, it’s going to change your life. For real for real!!
Matrix (1999)

This was one of the first films that really messes with your head with the story about different dimensions, time, religion, culture, spirituality, martial arts, machines taking over the world. You know that idea itself is quite plausible; you always feel uneasy watching this film because of the way they bend reality and make you believe that we are actually in a simulation. I think the question was like inception, it just keeps going on and on in your mind and it was never resolved. It’s never been resolved and so that’s what makes this film so powerful, so original and thought provoking.
Dune Trailer (1984)

The epics of the epics. The film that had an all-star cast but it kind of just missed the mark slightly. There was talk of Alejandro Jodorowsky doing the film — that would’ve been interesting. The documentary about the book is incredible. The storylines that he came up with for the characters and had written out in his book was phenomenal, truly phenomenal. This film is epic and David Lynch did an amazing job creating planets and new visual worlds has inspired me and my music.
