8 Tracks: Of Oscillations With Buran

Music

Originating from Manchester Buran are an electronic duo who have caught our attention on a number of occasions in recent times. The duo have released prominently on Night Noise and also featured on a collaborative release with our very own Timothy 'Heretic' Clerkin. Focussing on acid house and the melodic stabs best associated with electronica the pair have crafted a sound which has seen them slowly but surely rise up the ranks as they assert themselves as a live act and as DJ's.

We invited them to contribute to our 8 tracks series as they get geeky about oscillations.

Telefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough

We studied at university together in Leeds on a music production course. At the time we were both into slightly different stuff musically – this track blew us both away and was the first time we had heard that level of detail in an electronic track. Whilst not massively synth based it opened the door and we couldn’t leave it off the list.

  • Telefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough

We studied at university together in Leeds on a music production course. At the time we were both into slightly different stuff musically – this track blew us both away and was the first time we had heard that level of detail in an electronic track. Whilst not massively synth based it opened the door and we couldn’t leave it off the list.

  • Minilogue/Hitchhikers Choice - Short Version (Longer On Dvd)

Jaw dropping minimal synth work here – stopped us in our tracks when we first heard it and it still stands out. Also check the amazing stop motion video…

  • Squarepusher - The Modern Bass Guitar

When is a synth not a synth? Here. Another one that was instrumental to guiding us down the path we are on, this came out in our final of uni. Vague (very vague) memories of it live at ATP too. An exercise in great programming and virtuoso playing.

  • Stephan Bodzin - Singularity (Original) - Life And Death

Slow building, huge synth sounds – very clean production. Ticks all our boxes. We were listening to the ‘Powers of Ten’ record a lot when we were thinking of starting Buran (as apposed to our more electronica focused project Big Mister Doom) and this was a big inspiration.

  • John Tejada & Tin Man - Bim [Acid Test]

Shades of the Minilogue stuff here – loads of space and air on this. We’ve been hammering this EP recently – this one has a simple, raw analog sound to it that gels with some stuff we have been working recently in the studio.

  • Petar Dundov - Ideas From The Pond

Petar has had some huge tracks in the last year – but it was this record that first caught out ears. Not trying to be anything other than a great synth workout this track (and record) are best consumed on a lengthy train journey or similar endeavour.

  • Agents Of Time - Lower World (Original Mix) [Obscura Music]

Bangers. Any Agents Of Time track would fit here – all brilliant and well produced. We also really like the way these guys build a track live.

  • Dataline - Millions Of Things

We’ve recently moved over to a hardware only setup for playing out and writing – it is built around the three main Elektron boxes and some synths. Dataline is Cenk who is an absolute ninja on the Elektron stuff – so much so they employed him. As as result we have been getting into this stuff as we learn the ropes and try to master the three boxes between us. This video is a live version of a track from his new record. Great music – sort of full circle back round the opener from Telefon Tel Aviv.
