8 Tracks: Of Death/Goth Disco With Ivan Smagghe
The latest release on Ransom Note Records comes courtesy of our good friends (Ivan) Smagghe & (Rupert) Cross. The Talking To Katz EP features two deeply weird dancefloor destroyers featuring vocals from Emily Evans and David of the Junto Club, and two remixes from Ruf Kutz star Glowing Palms.
One of the most fearsome selectors in the biznezz, Ivan has pulled together a random bunch of dark disco deep cuts for his 8 Tracks feature. As he describes his selections, "It's about that ray of light in the dark, like a fucked up mirror ball." Fill yer boots below:

Ted Milton - Love Is Like A ViolenceA friend of mine of ours recently noted that this sounded like a demented version of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. A classic with many like minded people, including Keith Optimo (who is reissuing it) and Vladimir Ivkovic. Also underlines the strange importance of the saxophone in gothic context.

In Embrace - The Longer Living DaylightsParadoxical as you expect to start in the dark I suppose. This is hard to pigeonhole so we won’t. It’s all about the looseness and the repetition, something never happens, or everything does.

Toni Santagata - Ufo SexoSex with aliens with a b-side called “I Love The Punk” (sung with an extreme Italian accent). Cheese you cannot refuse.

Coil - Careful What You Wish ForNo comment is needed here, this is Coil. The 9 minute version from ‘Backwards’ is like being crucified under a disco spotlight. The sound of insanity.

Benny Blue - Mister RacketNathan Gregory Wilkins introduced us to a lot of Cocaine Disco records but this one stuck with us. Also underlines how much Glam Rock was great dance music.

Snowy Red - Baby TonightWell, Euroshima would be the obvious choice of Snowy Red (what a perfect band name!) but there has to be a slow dance moment in every good party. Great drum machines & infinite sadness.

Family Of God - Beautiful PeopleSuch an underrated band. This is the sound of ravens melting in the sun or baggy gone so smacked out, it can’t even dance anymore.
