8 Tracks Of: Aesthetically Mediated Belief With Lanark Artefax

This week marks the release of perhaps one of the most intriguing releases of the year so far. It comes in the form of an EP by Lanark Artefax, a Scottish based producer with remarkable promise. Focussing on the cult of storm chasers the ep is a futuristic glimpse into the whirlwind and those who follow. Glitchy electronics and beautiful soundscapes echo prominently throughout whilst the dusty rumble of drums roll beneath.

The EP has been heavily supported by an array of names including Aphex Twin and is due for release on Whities, a label which has been on a definitive run of form as of late.

We caught up with Lanark Artefax to talk beliefs within sound.

Xim Xom is like a kind of cult, alien figurehead (literally) of post-post-internet poetry culture. I think a lot about how much it’s worth trying to do art stuff using things like the internet. This stuff seems to be able to do it. I’ve sorta picked tracks that are being somewhat sincere in what they’re doing.
Drab Majesty - 39 By Design

That album is probably my favourite of the year so far. Better than any of the pseudo-nostalgic 80s stuff that’s being put out. This is totally its own thing. Bit of a masterpiece imo.
How To Destroy Angels - Is Your Love Strong Enough

I come back to this all the time. I listen to a lot of sorta metal and industrial stuff, lots of other Nine Inch Nails, Coil, even more poppy stuff like Rammstein and Marilyn Manson. I’ve listened to that sort of music since primary school when I was a s-k-8-r.

Been listening to this constantly the last year. Would kill to hear this stuff live but where do good bands play nowadays?

In a lot of ways this track represents a lot of the things I’m trying to get sorted with my own stuff. Quite willingly emotionally hollow, sorta resigns itself to an inability to communicate whatever it’s trying to communicate which is always the way to start to lock into something imo.
Mike Paradinas - Hi-Q

This track sorta doesn’t have a kick drum which is cool. I try and get any dancefloor stuff I do to sound like whatever this sounds like.
Mazzy Star - Into Dust

I think this was in the finale of The O.C which I think is why I like it? Where the girl does herself in if I remember correctly. For a few summers when I was a kid I would eat breakfast while watching that show and it’s sorta stayed with me. I’d like to hear t his kinda stuff played in clubs every so often so people can stop for a moment and have a good think.
