Stream Spoek Mathambo Doc About South Africa’s Rising Dance Scenes
Spoek Mathambo and Lebogang have put together a new documentary focusing on South Africa's thriving dance scene, with part one, now available, covering the sounds emerging from the townships of Durban, Johannesberg, Ivory Park and Soweto. There's a whole lot of unrivalled footage, with Mathambo covering everything from the fractured, grimey sound of Gqom- made by kids in Durban battering hacks of Fruity Loops- to the hyper speed pop of Shangaan Electro pioneered by Nozinja in Soweto, a man advocating for a culture that has been abused and marginalised.
If nothing else, the documentary goes some way to illuminating a country where the electronic music scene is exploding in a million directions at once, offering an insight on music that is still, by and large, only available in tiny snippets online-watch below
