Tia Cousins: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix
It’s the TC…
Channeling the energy of everyone’s favourite Essex hun, Tia Cousins is who she is, and she ain’t gonna apologise for it.
The London-based DJ mines for music on the outer fringes, whether its new wave oddities, off-kilter breakbeats or hypnotic techno. That said she’s not just got a knack for chugging it out in a dark club, she can raise a smile too with her synth-pop, folk and post-punk finds; an eclecticism that’s earned her a number of radio residencies over the years on NTS, Balamii and more recently on Noods Radio.
This no-nonsense attitude and bottomless music knowledge has caught the ears of events and festivals like Fabric, Field Manuevers and Love International, as well as the attention of Overmono who invited her to play as the support on their UK and Ireland tour.
Another duo who also imparted an invitation to her to join them on the warm up were our Glasgow favourites Optimo, and lucky for you lovely lot Tia has kindly given us the entire recording to share with the world… A whopping three hour trip live and direct from Phonox. Long may she sliv…
Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you
Hello I’m Tia Cousins and I live in London, but I’m from Essex babes! I am a person who presses buttons sometimes
What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
Where was the mix recorded?
It’s a live recording from my set at Phonox in February when I warmed up for Optimo 🙂
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
Somewhere vibey
What should we be wearing?
Nothing or something sexy xx
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
Not fussed, somewhere where the equipment works preferably and with beers nearby
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
Nelly Furtado – Do It. it’s a certified riddim
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
I don’t listen to too many mixes, I’ve got a well short attention span. But Jaye Ward’s mix for Dimensions was really sick
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
Paris Hilton, it would be iconic. On a real though, probably Andrew Weatherall cos he was a legend
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
Roland DJ-202 and some KRK Rokit 5 monitors, still got the same set up now lol. If anyone wants to gift me some CDJs or Pioneer wanna sponsor me, just holla at me my email is tiacousins@hotmail.co.uk
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
I’d say both are equally as important, you’ve gotta set the mood right but also end on a bop that’s suitable for the time you’re playing at.
What were the first and last records you bought?
The first record I ever got was Best Coast – The Only Place, last one I brought was Vicious Pink – 8:15 To Nowhere / The Spaceship Is Over There
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
Popping candy
If it was an animal what would it be?
A racoon
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
Anything that’s impossible to mix I delete from my collection, but I did keep Decius – Look Like A Man which is a ball ache to get out of!
Upcoming in the world of…
Some club things, few festis and a boat party with Optimo at Love International! Also continuing to sliv each any every day x
Anything else we need to discuss?
People need to stop putting cheese on noodles!!!!!
