“Pure Blueberry and Armadillos”

Russ, aka Skeleten’s, dropped by for a mix recorded in the early morning hours in his Sydney studio, windows open to an “unusually quiet street below”. Best enjoyed, “when your driver puts this on for an hour-long journey back from a party outside the city just before the sun rises while wearing your friend’s clothes”.

It arrives as Skeleten has just released his second album, “Mentalized,” this month which explores how the world around us shapes our minds. “This whole record is the feeling of your brain being shaped by all the forces in the world.” From trip-hop to dreamlike vocal outings, the album blends industrial elements with deep house rhythms, all filtered through Russ’s lens.

The mix is a taste of that musical world, featuring tracks from City Reverb, Dregs, DJ Counselling, and Tryphème.

“Pure Blueberry and Armadillo on a good day.”

Get it on, let’s go…

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

I’m Skeleten, but you can honestly just call me Russ. I’m in Eora (Sydney) in so-called Australia and I’m a Libra.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

I think I try to draw this whenever I make visualisers for my releases.

Where was the mix recorded?

Early hours of the morning in my new house/studio, windows open up high over a road that is usually full of traffic but in the deep hours is pleasingly still.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

In a stroke of luck your driver puts this on for an hour long journey back from a party outside the city just before the sun rises.

What should we be wearing?
Your friend’s clothes.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Sitting down in the corner of a huge warmly lit canvas tent while about 50 mates play games and roll around for 3 hours.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Damn, I really do like them all a lot, but I truly can not get enough of that Dregs release.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Judging purely by how much I’ve put it on it’s probably Gene On Earth’s 5198mins mix.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

I would obviously crumble under the pressure but maybe DJ EZ just to feel the energy.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

In my first sharehouse we got a couple of CDJ400s and they served us well, no rekordbox required.
I haven’t been DJing as much as just working on music recently, but I have an XDJ-RX which has the advantage of being an easy community service lend.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

End for sure. I feel like the start can kinda emerge slowly over a few tracks but you only get one final song, that’s life.

What were the first and last records you bought?

Going format agnostic here:
First: The Offspring – Conspiracy of One on CD
Last: that new Jack J – Blue Desert on Bandcamp

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
Pure Blueberry.

If it was an animal what would it be?

Armadillo on a good day.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Nothing is impossible.

Upcoming in the world of Skeleten…
Second album ‘Mentalized’ comes out on Feb 7. Golden Plains Festival in March. Before then it’s pure studio, nature and friends for me. <3
