Sarahtonin – The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix
Do!! You!!! radio host and selector steps up for a round of Ransom
The great Sarahtonin is a selector who’s not one to fit into boxes. Less about genre boundaries and more about pure, unadulterated feeling – crafting sets that are part emo-odyssey, part dance floor magic built of rare disco through to techno Sarah’s is one for the journey…
Her Do!! You!!! radio show has already garnered her a cult following, with listeners all over the world. Whether she’s lighting up the sweaty confines of Corsica Studios, festival stages like Gala, or curating mixes Sarah brings an infectious energy that’s impossible to ignore.
Buckle up, and let Sarah be your guide.
“Take off all your clothes… I feel the beat… come and dance with me…”
Listen below:
Please introduce yourself…
Who are you:
Where are you:
What are you:
I’m Sarah, I’m currently in my living room in Enfield and I’m a DJ, radio host and real-life tamagotchi – people tend to gravitate towards looking after me and it’s become a running joke!
Where was the mix recorded?
In my bedroom.
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
Walking through city streets.
What should we be wearing?
Chunky boots and a long coat. And a hoodie with the hood up and sunglasses; it’s for getting absorbed in.
What does your music look like?
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format.
Hmm, I’m not sure about dream format, but I’ve always thought a fun and interesting setting to record a mix would be Stone Circle at Glastonbury on Sunday night/Monday morning.
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
Tough one but probably The He-Men – The HE-MEN
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
Hmm, that’s a very tough question, but I think it might be Optimo at Field Maneuvers. I return to it again and again and have sent it to so many people. It was very special, and I’m glad it was recorded so I can go back to that Sunday night in Sputnik.
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
Maybe the DJ at my mum and dad’s wedding because it would have been amazing to play to so many people I love all at once and contribute to the music for that day… or Weatherall because I love his taste and approach to DJing and to life.
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
I started out with a Numark Mixtrack pro and now have 2 CDJ1000’s and a Pioneer mixer.
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
I think they’re equally important and spend a lot of time thinking about both. It’s always an exciting moment when you know what it’s going to be, whether that’s in advance or in the moment.
What were the first and last records you bought?
The first record I bought was Ultra Nate – How Long (for the Fire Island remix) and the last one was a pre-order of Decius Vol. II (Splendour & Obedience).
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
A marmite crumpet: chewy, squishy, punchy flavour and comforting (depending on how you feel about marmite I guess).
If it was an animal what would it be?
A baby elephant.
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything…
Hmm probably a disco track of some sort, I’ve definitely had a bit of a struggle with Suzi Lane – Harmony in the past.
Upcoming in the world of…
I’ve got some really exciting gigs and festivals that I’m looking forward to. I’ve got a b3b with Rosie Ama and Sofie K for the Gala x Pickle Factory NYE celebrations coming up, which I’m very excited about. Also heading to Hastings for the first time to play in a church on NYD. I’ve heard very good things about the place and I’m looking forward to finally checking it out. I’m a resident at Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton’s Low Life party, which turns 30 this year(!), and we’re celebrating that at Corsica Studios in February. Low Life parties are always really special but this one is going to be a biggie. I’m also planning to attempt some music production and see how that goes. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while now and I’m finally committing myself to it – putting it in writing here is to hold myself accountable!
Anything else we need to discuss.
Why a smoothie is considered a drink and soup is considered a food when they’re essentially the exact same concept.
EDITOR FOOTNOTE:
So I got bored with PR intros we always write and wrote a poem which got left out in the end but thought we’d maybe leave it in down the bottom here if you’re still reading…
There was a selector most wonderfully wild,
Whose musical spirit could never be filed!
With Do!! You!!! she’d dance and she’d wildly cavort,
Her beats like a madcap melodious sport!
Oh Sarah, oh Sarah, with mixes so rare,
Her rhythms would float through the musical air,
From disco to techno, from emo to groove,
Her selections would make every dance floor just move!
At Corsica Studios and festivals bright,
She’d spin her sound magic from morning to night,
No boundary could hold her, no genre constrain
Her infectious, wild spirit – delightfully insane!
Her listeners danced in a worldwide delight,
Her cult following spinning with musical might,
A selector whose passion would leap and would sing,
With beats that would make every dancer’s heart ring!
So hurrah for our Sarah, the musical queen,
Whose radio show was the most curious scene,
A rhapsody, riddle, a musical dream,
Where feeling and rhythm forever would stream!
