Paume – The ‘Sensual Autobahn’ Ransom Note Mix

Music

Currently residing in Paris, 24 year old Hugo Billionnet aka Paume, has only been making music for a mere 3 years. Recently moving from a quiet suburb into the beating heart of the city, Paume is part of a new breed of musicians and party-starters sick of the cities overpriced wine bars and noise restraints – moving the parties back into the shadows.

With his debut release on Melodic about to drop we had him set out his R$N aural mandate…

Who are you?

Paume

Where are you?

In my brand new apartment in Paris, looking for the best spot to setting up my home studio (trying to avoid problematic relations with neighbours).

What are you?

I’m an electronic music producer and an architect as well.

What is a Paume Sound?

A music on hold, progressive, raw, ethereal, salient, trying to be in contrast at every moment, trying to reconcile haze and burst of light, surprise and waiting time.

What does releasing on Melodic mean to you?

I’m really happy to be part of their roster, UK has always been a huge source of inspiration for me in terms of music. I really hope they will continue to release electronic music.

Please explain the titles of your debut EP.

I’d prefer to keep this unexplained and let your imagination do the work.

I’ve never been to Paris in the winter… What’s it like?

Well, when it’s really really cold, you can find some totally deserted streets and that’s actually very appreciatable and surprising.

What was the music of your teenage rebellion?

System Of a Down, D12, Dr Dre, The Fugees…

First and last record bought?

First CD: Coolio – Gangsta’s Paradise
First Vinyl: I:Cube – Disco Cubizm (Daft Punk Mix) Such a wonderful discovery, sick track

Last One: Floating Points – Nuits Sonores. (Can’t wait to play that 12”)

If your sound was a visual thing, what would it look like?

A weather map, with anticyclone/depression animations.

Now onto the mix;
Where was the mix recorded?

In my previous flat (16 square meters). My music gear took up three quarters of the space!

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

First time I thought about doing a mix, I was thinking, 'ok let’s do something really melodic and soft that you can hear peacefully at home'. But little by little I realised that house beats were a real need for me and mixing club stuff was out of the question. So that mix was a way to pay tribute to all these tracks that doesn’t necessarily fit in a club but are still repetitive. I guess the best way to listen to that mix would be “being in movement”. In a car on a huge desert highway, on a bike or even just walking should do the trick.

What should we be wearing?

The suit that perfectly fit with your means of transport. The best would be a space rocket and a cosmonaute suit.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Pretty cliché but a beach and a smiling crowd would be perfect. I’m not a geek about soundsystems, so… Just a decent one! All formats are good to use, you just have to know what format fits best with your mix idea.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

I really love the one from Manuel tur – Es Dub. Really refine style but definitely get a nice dark atmosphere.

What’s your favourite-recorded mix of all time?

It’s hard to choose one but the FACT mix of John Talabot (out in 2012) was a really nice discovery!

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

I’m not really comfortable with the Dj legend thing. I’ll be more than happy to do a B2B2B with Garnier and MCDE.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

The very first was Virtual DJ and a mouse haha, I was like 16. Now I only got two turntables and a 2-channel mixer, pretty simple. But I love to use traktor controller or an APC 40 as well.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Dj sets are like telling a story to people…so both are really important…but the more tricky would be the starting track. It’s like greetings to the crowd, you have to catch the attention.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

It would taste like an arsenic pudding.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A monkey swinging through the jungle on vines.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

I don’t have any records of that sort…

What's upcoming in the world of Paume?

– A remix for François and the Atlas Mountain out on Domino Records, coming really soon.
– A remix for Sau Poler out on Atomnation.
