OK Williams: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix

Music

South-east London proves time and time again that it has some of the best musical talent in the capital: cue SE selectress OK Williams. Having followed her radio shows, from Balamii to Netil and NTS – the station she works behind the scenes at – for a while now, her sets are always high energy seamlessly blending anything from electro and deconstructed club experiments to bass, garage and jungle.

Aside from upcoming dates at Clair in Amsterdam and Cell 200, this summer sees her taking her distinct flavours to festivals including Glastonbury, Love International and Wale's newest event Headroom.

We're delighted to host this mix; a true introduction to her sound. Remember her name, you'll be seeing more of it…

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

I’m Kanyin aka OK Williams, a south east London selectress.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us?

Never been much of a drawer. I’ll leave it up to you to visualise this mix. But maybe something with lots of green in it. I like that colour.

Where was the mix recorded?

NTS Radio where I have had many an after work mix.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Tbh this mix would be best served in the club. So I’d say the next best thing which is getting ready to go to the club lol. Whack this on and it might get you in the mood?

What should we be wearing?

Ummm clothes? Lol

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

2 CDJs, 2 Turntables, an Allen and Heath Xone:23 but one with 4 channels (which doesn’t exist but should) and a d&b audiotechnik system. Somewhere high up with a nice view of the sky. Or the sea. I like views.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Not sure I could say of all time but one of my favourites is the Job B Metalheadz podcast recorded in Miami. All my favourite rolling jungle tunes in one mix from 2011. Played this one a loooot when I was in my first year of uni.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

First home set up yet to come… Gotta seize that practice time whenever I can. Very lucky to have friends that let me come over and have a mix whenever I want, and the NTS studio when they are free. I should maybe bite the bullet soon… but they’re so expensive…

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

'County Lines 2' by Frosty. Haven’t been able to stop playing this one. Must really like it to throw a UK drill tune into a very dancey mix.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

They’re both very important of course, but for me I think it has to be the starting track. First couple of tunes really set the tone for me. Sometimes I try and make a bit of a statement about what’s to come.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First I ever bought was Voodoo – D’Angelo and the last I bought was a wicked garage number called Fone Tune.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

A mixed platter or mezze or something like that. Different flavours, different foods, I like to try and mix it up a bit – I get bored playing the same genre for too long.

If it was an animal what would it be?

I think this mix is pretty no frills and straight to the point. So maybe something quite basic. Like a shark lol.

Upcoming in the world of OK Williams?

Catch me at Clair Amsterdam at the end of the month! And in different fields across the English countryside both playing and skanking out 🙂
