New Hook: The ‘Wednesday Alternative’ Mix
We first heard about New Hook two years ago when they contributed to Ombra International’s infamous VA series.
The Leipzig-based duo have been making their heady blend of new wave and post-disco since 2018, the year the pair released their debut single via local label Riotvan.
The Ombra release followed with the ladies making another pitstop at Live At Robert Johnson, before returning to the home of their first single earlier this year for ‘Manipulation’, a punkish synth wave cut laced with their trademark sultry vocals.
Their music is sleazy and sexy, tripped out and hypnotic; tipping the hat to the sounds of the 80s from electro and new wave to post punk and EBM.
Alongside an interview, the pair share a mix that encompasses the music that they love from dark, dub-wise electronica to slow, squelchy acid, leftfield electronics and DIY wave.
Who are you, where are you and what are you?
Hello everybody. We are Ilka and Linda – the lovely girls of New Hook. We are two music lovers and power women from Leipzig, Germany.
What does your music sound like?
Our music sounds the way we are. Cool. Sexy. And sometimes a little crazy, weird and funny.
Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
We love to walk through nature which always surprises us with its diversity. We took a drawing of Ernst Haeckel – who was born near our hometown Leipzig btw. In our opinion, this picture perfectly describes the mix we did for you. Trippy with a lil bit of an acid vibe! =)
Pro-Gardening tip: Show this mix to your plants and they will grow fast af.
Where was the mix recorded?
In Ilka’s home studio between cats and dogs that were constantly begging for our attention.
What would be the ideal environment to listen to the mix?
During a car ride with a stop at the edge of the forest and a walk in nature, while you are eating a slice of pineapple.
What should we wear?
Sunglasses are never wrong. Downwards the head – nothing, of course! 😉
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
Doesn’t matter. The main thing is that there are no technical issues.
Which track in the mix is your current favorite?
Kuru – Markus Gibb, cause its damn cool and sexy and little crazy, weird and funny.
What is your favorite recorded mix of all time?
We love all our mixes, because its always full of songs we love. Thanks to all these fabulous artists for the music!
If you could DJ with any DJ from history, who would it be and why?
We keep that for ourselves, cause it’s like blowing out candles on your birthday cake. Keep the wish for yourself, otherwise it will not come true.
What was your first DJ setup at home and what is it now?
We started with one player and now we have two!
What’s more important, the track you start with or the track you end with?
Actually both. Okay, a little more the beginning. Its like a book – if its already boring at the beginning, you won‘t read it until the end.
What were the first and last records you bought?
Depeche Mode was the first and DJ Koze was the last one.
If this mix was something edible, what would it taste like?
Definitely like a pineapple. A majestic, unique fruit that tastes different every time. Sometimes sweeter. Sometimes more sour. And if you’re late, it tastes like liquor.
If it were an animal, what would it be?
A Pineapple-Fox, which just exists in our dreams.
One record in your collection that’s impossible to mix with anything?
“There will be people who will say play it safe, that’s too risky – you will take that chance and have no fear. You won’t let these questions restrain or trouble you. You will point yourself in the direction of your dreams. You will find the strength in the sound and make your transition.“ – Underground Resistance –
Is there anything else we need to talk about?
Selfcare! The most important thing is: be good to yourself and others, treat yourself and your surrounding with respect.
Spread love and light!
