maya q: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix

Both EPs, along with the releases’ predecessor on Scuffed Recordings, showcase her experimental approach to creating swung rhythms, low end frequencies and syncopated drum patterns inspired by jungle, UK bass, breaks and UKG, but with her own unique melodic and playful touch.

When maya isn’t making music, she DJing as part of the Co-Select crew alongside the likes of TSUNIMAN, Airali and Will Hofbauer, the latter of whom released her most recent musical outing, break rev, on his Third Place imprint.

We got her on board for a mix that threads together the music she loves from poppy electronics to ethereal jungle, liquid DnB and playful vox-soaked rhythms.

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

I’m maya, I’m in SE London, and I’m a software engineer and very occasionally a producer/dj.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Floaty, non serious, melodic

Where was the mix recorded?

My living room.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

At home.

What should we be wearing?

Comfies.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

343 soundsystem, somewhere rural, no set times.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

My mum.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Two XDJs I went halves on with a friend and a slightly broken mixer we got at mate’s rates. Same set up now, except with a replaced XDJ.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track you start on.

What were the first and last records you bought?

The first was the What a Pleasure EP by Beach Fossils. The last record was Multiple Restarts by Will Hofbauer.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Blue jolly rancher.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A fox.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Anything polyrhythmic.
