i-sha: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix
DJ and promoter i-sha discovered her love for DJing whilst living in Brighton.
Through landing residencies at one of the city’s foremost clubs, Patterns and label and party series Accidental Meetings, she’s sharpened her skills and her ear for crisp club variations and bass-heavy experiments.
As well as cruising the airwaves on 1BTN each month, where she’s hosted guests like TSVI, Iceboy Violet and ex.sses, she’s also made guest appearances on stations across the UK, from NTS to Noods and Balamii alongside hosts like Martha and LCY.
Her latest venture, The Secret Shade, is shaped by her musical tastes and her experience as a club resident. Announced recently, the project will revolve around a series of special club nights with her favourite artists, the first of which took place on Halloween with Batu and Shannen SP.
She takes care of this week’s Shine A Light On mix with a shapeshifting selection of tunes that move across sounds, styles and tempos…
Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you
Elloo I’m Georgia and I’m currently based in the Southwest tryna move into Bristol! I DJ, host radio shows, design stuff and cook some lovely spicy meals.
What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
That’s a tricky one. My mixes and selections often depend on my mood. I’m quite an indecisive person so I reckon this mix definitely reflects that in terms of sound and tempo, always tryna switch it up a bit. Dunno why but one of those slinky things came into my head immediately for some reason. Can be smooth and satisfying but often can get tangled up in things and jump all over the place.
Where was the mix recorded?
This mix was recorded a few days ago at a friend’s house in Bristol… lucky to have such a beautiful space to record in. In the middle of trying to move to Bristol at the moment so a lot of my equipment and cables are deeep somewhere in boxes.
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
In a dark, gritty, small and intimate space with some good pals and a fat old sound system
What should we be wearing?
Whatever you want.
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
Ideally something similar to the experience I had at On Kilter a couple of months back. 300 capacity festival with all my mates at the front, sun was going down and I felt such a warmth from it all – nothing really beats a festival set with all your rowdy mates and a beautiful location.
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
Hmm difficult to answer that, I’ve been really enjoying the opening track in the mix called Omiyage by foodman. Some crazy arrangement of percussion and melodies, not really heard anything like it. Also the closing track which is some new forthcoming material on a certain label I love – not sure if I can reveal much more about it.
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
I wouldn’t say I have one specific favourite but a few I’ve recently been digging have been Leeway for the Accidental Meetings podcast, k means gmix for Man Band, any OJOO GYAL mixes, anu’s mix for Dummy Mag a few months back and also Judaah’s mixtape for BFDM.
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
Never had a proper DJ set up when I first started playing. I was lucky enough to do radio often to practice and also I had a lot of mates with great setups which I’d regularly use. Now between me and my partner, we have a couple of turntables, xdj 700s and a xone-23.
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
I really love my intros and outros but maybe the intro as I like to reset and maybe introduce my set a little more.
What were the first and last records you bought?
Can’t remember my first but my last were a couple of dancehall 7″ from Rarekind.
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
A mint and coriander chutney – sharp zingy and spicy.
If it was an animal what would it be?
Maybe a praying mantis.
Upcoming in the world of I-sha…
I’ve been working on a couple new projects – one which I’ve recently started called “The Secret Shade”. Really eager to get stuck into a load of new things in the next few months plus a few more gigs to look forward to, also just started freelancing as a graphic designer in a great studio in Bristol. More will be revealed soooon!
Anything else we need to discuss?
I reckon that’s everything for now 🙂
Follow I-sha.
