Evan Jamal Vincent is deeply immersed in Toronto’s underground dance music scene.

He moonlights as Emissive, an alias he donned after time spent in Detroit and London where he found himself inspired by the music scenes in both places.

At home in Toronto he’s working in several different areas of music: as a promoter he’s brought over artists like Funkineven, Max McFerren and Octo Octa to his Planet Island parties while as a DJ he hosts a monthly radio show on Montreal’s N10.as called Vitamix.

We clocked onto his musical output last year through his Wave Science EP for Pacific Rhythm which blended elements of cosmic house and electronic boogie. Now he’s readying his second release City of Rooms on Telephone Explosion Records, a collection of music built on fluid rhythms, 303 patterns and elegant synths and pads. When he’s not making music solo, he’s producing house cuts alongside his friend Ian under the guise of Active Surplus, or helping other artists with mixing and mastering work.

Stepping up for this week’s Shine A Light On mix, Emissive delivers a ride through squelchy acid, crunchy breakbeat and driving electro…

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

I’m Evan. I’m in Toronto, Canada and I’m riding this wave just like you

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Where was the mix recorded?

At my crib in the Junction

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Wherever you’re at, hopefully on some speakers that can knock.

What should we be wearing?

Something baggy but tailored, elegant and futuristic

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

MANFLESH

If it was an animal what would it be?

An Unidentified Debris-Carrying Larvae

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

100% improvised-unreleased-originals mix with Neuralink recording direct to DAT while I’m laying awake after the rave

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Dosis – Naranja (Dub). I’ve been listening to that track nonstop since I first heard it. Such a killer collab and sets a new bar for can-con if you ask me.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Theo Parrish – Contemporhythms

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Larry Levan for what should be very obvious reasons

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Started with Machine Mikro MK2 MID. I’d up to cracked version of Ableton live 8. It’s been a long road with many iterations but now I’ve got the works baby! 2 CDJ 2000nxs2, 2 Technics 12000s, Xone 92.

I look at my DJ setup and think “whoa, I am a complete and utter prick” but my partner and I often have people over to practice or record mixes and we loan out the kit for pretty cheap so it’s beneficial for the community in some respects.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

For a recorded DJ mix I’d say it’s the one you start on but for a party it’s definitely how you close it out

What were the first and last records you bought?

I started collecting records when I was spending time in Hamilton and had some disposable income. I was new to the area and didn’t have any friends there yet. There was a spot up the street from me called Stardust Records which was marketed as an “oldies” record shop but I figured I’d have a peek. I hate to leave a record store empty handed so I ended up picking up Revelación – House Of The Rising Sun which I would practice mixing into tracks off of a copy of Local Artist – Feelings that my homie Ian gave me as a gift.

The most recent record I copped was Christian Bloch ‎– Paradigm used from Invisible City Records. I’m really fascinated with tracky, stripped down repetitive records. Probably because I often struggle to make that kind of music myself. Sadly, I tend to have a “more is more” attitude in the studio most days.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

I prefer to not place those kinds of limiting beliefs upon myself.

Upcoming in the world of …

Working on some new material for the Active Surplus project. Manifesting some shows in the Mediterranean this summer if all goes well ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Anything else we need to discuss?

You know the deal. Be yourself, spread love, stop the bullshit
