Coming from a background of experimental and noise records, this mix is designed to “clear the floor”…

We recently released the most excellent debut EP from the mysterious Double Body. Four scuzzy, Lo-Fi dance floor destroyers that brim with hypnotic patterns and mesmerising, looped samples.

Even though they won’t tell us their real identity we thought we’d see what a mix from them would sound like… from early Photek that sounds “like an abandoned factory on Mars”—which gives you a sense of the vibe the mix reflects their approach: a bit of an outsider, but definitely still plugged right into the world of the electronic.

Early Photek that sounds “like an abandoned factory on Mars”— will give you a sense of the vibe they’re after and their general approach: a bit of an outsider, but definitely still plugged right into the world of the electronic.

It’s the sound of someone who’s more interested in creating an experience than hitting traditional club music markers.

DJ tear gas, let’s go…

Listen below:

What’s your story?
I want to contribute something meaningful to club music. That’s all I started with. It’s a process. I know it’s a lot to ask.

Who are you, and where do your roots lie?

I’m a solo producer with a home studio. I came to techno via experimental and noise records, and love bridging that gap.

What’s the narrative that brought you here?

How to make every repetition different. Club music is built on loops, but that doesn’t mean every iteration of the loop has to be the same.

How do you define yourself within this landscape?

Probably an outsider, but not a hermit. Though I have a lot of heroes in this scene, I want my music to stand out.

Where are you currently, and how does it shape you?

I work from home. I work in spare hours between my real life and day job. But creating music I am anywhere. My mind could be on the moon, or in the Mariana trench, or inside a volcano, while my body sits at a desk in front of a computer screen.

Where was this particular mix recorded?

It’s not a DJ mix, because the material didn’t fully warrant one, but more of a narrative experience. I created it in my own studio from my own record collection over a few days, letting the tracks guide me.

What’s the ideal setting—environment, mood—to experience it fully?

Headphones. It would empty the floor.

And in terms of attire, what might best suit a listener for this journey?

While I recommend a Korn x Adidas co-branded purple sequinned tracksuit, I won’t enforce any dress code.

Describe your ultimate setting to record a mix—location, system, format. What’s the aesthetic?

I’m not a DJ in the mixology sense, and my record collection is probably lighter on house and techno than a lot of peers. So I have to be dorky about recording a mix, doing the precision work in a DAW instead of on the decks. So it’s painstaking and possibly more sterile than others, but I can still be expressive and creative in the ways I want.

A favourite track from the mix…

Early Photek. A lifetimer for me. So dark, but spacious. Like an abandoned factory on Mars.

If you could choose any DJ from history to go back-to-back with, who would it be, and what would you want to talk to them about?

I’d love to sit in on a NASA rave in NY in the early 90’s and watch what the DJs were doing. I doubt much conversation would flow, but I’d have a great time.

Take us back—what was your first setup, and how does it compare to your current tools?

Basically the same. I’m an Ableton nerd and have been since I was a teenager. But at least I know how to use it a little better now.

First or last track. What’s more important?

I’m a big fan of track 2. I think the power to hold attention can be overlooked, and skipping to track 2 can help me identify a frontloaded record.

What were the first and last records you added to your collection?

The first record I ever bought was Fat Of The Land. The most recent few were Sauco by QOA, the new Oranssi Pazuzu, JLIN, and Cosmic Tones Research Trio LPs.

If this were a flavour, what would it bring to the palate?

A lot of umami. It’s not too saccharine, not too acidic, not too metallic. There are some mellow notes.

If it were to take on an animal form, what qualities would it embody?

Maybe something big and graceful like a blue whale. Capable of power.

Which record in your collection can’t be mixed with anything else?
Almost all of them.

Upcoming projects, what should we be keeping an eye on?

I just released my debut EP, Mirage, on Ransom Note Records, which was a trip. The next one will be out in early ’25, but for now, this is all I have.

Anything more we need to talk about?

Every moment takes me closer to realising the dream.
