Beigean: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix

Music

By day a dental technician and carvery chef, by night a purveyor of addictive electronics and hypnotic techno, DJ, producer and label boss Beigean is something of a jack of all trades.

When he’s not spreading the gospel about gum health, he’s crafting house-driven productions for the likes of Hungarian Hot Wax and Jon Loveless’ Hot Concept, as well as his own Tava Discs imprint, launched in 2018 as a platform for house and techno offerings that celebrate the heritage of their makers.

More recently he’s contributed a remix for our own Ransom Note Records, putting a hypnotic spin on Bawrut and Chico Blanco’s ‘Triangulo De Amor Bizzaro’, which you’ll be able to wrap your ears round very soon.

Before that (and several other releases he’s got penned this year) he take the reigns for this week’s Shine A Light On mix. So, take your lunch break, clear a rather large space in your room and get your limbs moving.

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

Hey Bunj, how you going. I’m Beigean and I’m currently in bed typing this for you. I’m a dental technician, part time carvery chef, I make music as Beigean and I run a label called Tava Discs.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Where was the mix recorded?

In my bedroom.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

A sugarcane field in Burdekin, Queensland, where a patch in the middle of the field would be cut out as the main room. There would be heaps of Esky’s filled with a range of freshly pressed fruit juice supplied by the local fruit farms. It would be supervised by kangaroos wearing boxing gloves, but they’re more for show really, there won’t be any trouble. The set up would be CDJs and a mixer, played on a dub soundsystem.

What should we be wearing?

Traditional attire that’s applicable to your cultural identity.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Played on a loud system in a room with plenty of dancing space.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Hier und Jetzt, I imagine it being played at the Love Parade.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

CD 2 of the Ibiza Annual ’98 mixed by Boy George, it’s what first got me interested in DJing and influenced my style.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Tuff Jam, the atmosphere would be blissful with all that bass bouncing around. After the gigs over I’d kindly ask them if I could borrow all their dubplates so I could rip them.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

A pair of Stanton str8-30s and a Numark Dm 950 mixer. Now it’s a pair of Pioneer Plx 100 0’s and a DJM 450.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The last track.

What were the first and last records you bought?

Sucker DJ by Pryda from Three Shades Records in Birmingham ‘05, bought with money saved by train hopping to college. Form by Merv off Juno.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Turkish delight made with bhang.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A mountain goat.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Nahid Akhtar – Naye Arman Jaga ne Ki

Upcoming in the world of …

… dental technology; Reece Dental Lab will be investing in a digital set up in the near future, exciting times ahead.

Anything else we need to discuss?

Look out for the next Tava Discs release around springtime, A VA compilation out on Hot Concept very soon with all proceeds going to Habibi Works, and lastly check out Hungarian Hot Wax records for some serious scoville heaters.
