Flug 8 – The Monday Is OK Mixtape
Ambient melancholia and dream-like states for a December Monday.
Last month, our old friend Daneil Herrmann aka Flug 8 made a triumphant return to Ransom Note Records with his new album, Bermuda LP, his first release with us since 2020’s Electric Fields. Comprising nine ethereal tracks evoking the serene beauty of space, each piece sparkled like distant stars and cosmic ambiance. “A weightless experience akin to witnessing a celestial phenomenon,” propeling listeners beyond the asteroid belt, emerging through cosmic gas clouds. Flug 8’s most ambitious and timeless work to date, we couldn’t not ask for his take on a ‘Monday Is OK’ mix for 2023.
Strap yourself in for a sonic adventure in the outer reaches… read the interview below:
Please introduce yourself…
Who are you:
My name is Daniel Herrmann, some people also know me by the synonym Flug 8, with whom I have been releasing electronic music since the mid-00s.
Where are you:
I have been living in the north of Denmark for 2 years and am originally from Offenbach Germany.
What are you:
I would describe myself as an artist.
Tell us about the Monday mixtape you’ve put together for us.
Since I keep receiving beautiful music from friends and acquaintances, I thought about making mixes at regular intervals that would fuse it all together.
If it were to be drawn what would it look like?
Since I like to draw myself when listening to these mixes,
I don’t see any particular drawing that I associate with this mix, as it could be anything.
If it were a food what would it be?
Maybe a good olive oil
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
In a snowy forest house in front of the fireplace.
What should we be wearing
I’ll leave that to you
Where was it recorded?
In my recording studio. It is a former power station from a disused concrete factory on the banks of a beautiful fjord.
How do you feel about Mondays in general, excited…or?
It depends on what’s going on.
Who got you hooked on electronic music?
My grandfather was the first. He built electronic organs.
Who would you say are your biggest influences, and what do you hope to achieve with your music?
It’s everything I’ve ever liked. I can’t stick to a particular genre.
What were your original aspirations as musicians and how do you think you’re shaping up?
My ambitions or visions have largely never changed. But what has changed and developed again and again is technology.
Some self-help questions for a Monday: Am I excited to dive into the challenges that I have lined up for the week?
It depends on what it’s about. Not everything in life is fun.
Am I looking forward to engaging with the people I am meeting or working with?
Most of the time, yes
Am I going to my dream job?
Since it’s very difficult to make a living from your music, I run another business, which makes me independent and of course, I really enjoy doing that.
Am I being compensated fairly for the value I bring to my job?
As an artist, usually not, but there are always moments when that can happen.
Do I feel energised, rested, and confident?
Most of the time, yes
If you were trapped on a desert island with one other person, who would you choose?
No idea
How long would it be before you eat them?
I’m not a cannibal 🙂
Your doctor says you need more exercise….what do you take up for exercise?
I move quite a bit
If you could travel in time…where in time would you go? Why?
Into the future out of pure interest
What was the first electronic record you heard and how did it make you feel?
I think it was Kraftwerk’s `Mensch – Maschine` that my father heard over and over again. That felt different to me than anything else I knew at the time.
How does your brain work when making music? How does it work when you aren’t?
I can’t actually describe it because I try to turn off my brain as much as possible when I make music.
When I’m not making music or doing art, I think much more analytically.
What were the first and last records you bought?
I don’t remember exactly what the first ones were, as there were always many different ones. The last ones were world music.
What are you obsessed with at the moment?
Working on a new album.
What’s your answer to everything?
Nothing
