8 Tracks – Kelpe

Music

Ahead of Kelpe’s ‘DUB002’ release on Don’t Be Afraid later this month, the second of the DBA DUBS series and his first release on the prestigious label, we got him to furnish us with his top 8 influential tracks.

Analord / Aphex - Xmd5a

Obviously various Aphex Twin material has infuenced me over the years, but this is one of the later on tracks that I am particularly fond of. I guess the track Monte Verit is in part inspired by the stuff he did under the Analord name, and this is probably my favourite track in that series.

  • New Order - Every Little Counts

I think early albums by New Order was the first electronic music I got really into as a kid. I remember being ill off school for a few days and I just had this tape recorder and New Order tapes borrowed off my older brother. I was just listening to on repeat, so when I listen to that stuff now I feel nostalgic and a bit queasy as it reminds me of being ill off school.

  • Dabrye - Magic Says

This was always in my record bag and DJ sets back in the day. Lovely production, quite compressed and dirty with a good swing, and the record is pressed really loud as well. It says this was a Dilla collab on the youtube link but as far as I know he worked on the other tracks on the record and not this one in particular.

  • Syclops - Where's Jason's K?

Totally love this and never get bored of playing it out. Bouncy, analog and melodic, definitely an other inspiration for Monte Verit, especially that pseudo arpegiatted bass.

  • M83 - Run Into Flowers (jackson And His Computer Band Midnight Fuck Remix)

I don’t like M83 but this is a fantastic remix. Jackson and His Computer Band’s first album was super impressive and I hope the forthcoming one is good too.

  • Luke Vibert - Funky Acid Stuff

This B side track from ’95 – ’99 EP was another one always in the record bag (first track on this youtube link). Kind of the ideal Luke Vibert track because it captured all of his different styles in one piece – a crap throwaway title but at least it describes how it sounds. Like the bit where it briefly changes tempo at about 3′ 30″ as well.

  • Little Computer People / Anthony Rother - Little Computer People

One of my favourite electro tracks. My friends and I used to always play this at our night we had many years ago. Think this was discovered through Depth Charge / J Saul Kane’s Electro Boogie compilation.

  • Nick Drake - Blossom

According to last.fm this is my most played song, so it would be silly not to include it – I’m presuming it might have influenced me in some way. Beautiful song with great lyrics.
