Working predominantly with film-stills and found imagery from 1930s and 1940s Hollywood, artist Nina Mae Fowler uses traditional techniques (drawing, bas relief, etching) to explore themes of idolatry, celebrity and fame. Striking and decadent, her works have a glamour which belie their dark and unsettling subtext.

Nina Fowler has been nominated for the BP Portrait Prize, the Jerwood Drawing Prize and the Young Masters Prize. Her work is admired and collected by British film, music and fashion luminaries and she is included in private and public collections in Europe and the USA.

To coincide with her current exhibition as part of the The Truscott Arts Program (TAP), Greatcoat films caught up with the artist herself in her studio to get an insight into her work. Move on down to the bottom of the page to watch the great short film they’ve put together.
