Bárbara Boeing: The Ransom Note Mix

A heady mix of downtempo and balearic goodness.
Bárbara Boeing is a stupendously good digger. She’s been collecting records for many years and her far reaching sets offer but a mere glimpse into her musical sphere.
From funk to soul, downtempo to balearic, bossa nova to house and beyond. Nothing is off limits for the Brazilian DJ who was raised in Curitiba and since moved to Milan bringing with her a renowned reputation for eclectic sets.
This mix offers a brief taste of her skills as a DJ as she weaves effortlessly between chilled out tempos whilst demonstrating that ‘dance’ music need not be heavy, hard or dark but fun, joyous and uplifting. That’s before we even mention her work as a producer.
This one has us dreaming of sunnier climates and brighter days. They’re coming soon, believe us.
Listen and read the interview below:
Please introduce yourself…
Hi, I am Bárbara!
Who are you, where are you and what are you?
I am a building engineer, a DJ and now and then a producer too! I was born in Curitiba, south of Brazil, I am based in Milan, but right now I am in Istanbul answering these questions while I wait to do a tour to some cute mosques around town.
What am I?
I am a music lover who is able to work with music, so maybe I am a lucky human being.
What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
My music explores too many genres, speed and decades… This means that one picture/drawing would be a bit short to explain it all. I don’t know how to draw it in a good way, but maybe the next pictures can help? (Attached below. They are not from the old internet though…)
Where was the mix recorded?
In my living room.
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
When you arrive at the beach, or when you just dream about it…
What should we be wearing?
Havaianas (Brazilian flip flops) and a swimming suit.
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
Hmmm… I am not a fan of surprises, I enjoy my house equipment and also recording it in my pyjamas while having a coffee. So, my living room is the ideal spot to do that.
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
I love ‘’ Dedé e os Ajudantes – Marley’’… it shows the Brazilian vibe beautifully.
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
Lexx – 30 minutes of Peace No. 1
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
Antal – Our music matches not only along his tropical taste but also when he grows a bit darker. I enjoy the cohesive ups and downs he creates and I am sure I could follow that.
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
Before:
– 2x CDJs – 200
– 1x mixer super old and broken, don’t remember the brand
– No monitors or turntables for a long time
Now:
2x turntables MK7
1x mixer Pioneer 700
1x XDJ 700
1x XDJ 1000
2x Klipsch monitors
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
Both! I love to create a change in the beginning from what was being played before, but I also enjoy giving them a weird, but beautiful track in the end so they can remember that moment forever.
What were the first and last records you bought?
I just bought Summer Nerves from Ryuichi Sakamoto which was a blind purchase but I trusted him. I am glad I did! My first record was a gift from a friend, it was a Pink Floyd album which I love…
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
‘’Brigadeiro’’, a Brazilian sweet that I love.
If it was an animal what would it be?
A turtle! The set is super slow and moves like a turtle, so that is the right frequency to be at 🙂
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
Everything is mixable with the right amount of time we put into it.
Upcoming in the world of…
This year I will be releasing some remixes alongside my party in Brazil (Alter Disco), and I am beginning to create a compilation of older music from Brazil… let’s see how it goes!
Anything else we need to discuss?
I have some exciting gigs on the horizon… Lost Village, Robert Johnson and Panorama that I am looking forward to in EU/UK and a cool South American tour upcoming in 2 weeks
