Jaakko Eino Kalevi returned at the end of last year with new album, Chaos Magic (the Greek concept of “kháos”) – a double album of elemental pop and baroque electronics. It was a wild, immersive experience written and recorded largely in his new home of Athens. Navigating a kaleidoscope of styles of cosmic jazz, neon synthpop, disco and space-rock journeys, it featured contributions from artists like Alma Jodorowsky, Jimi Tenor, Faux Real and Sigurlaug Gísladóttir.

Jaakko is back in the UK this October in support of Emiliana Torrini (including a date at Earth on 20th Oct) and a solo tour just after, which includes a date at the Shacklewell Arms on 21st Oct.

Much like his music this mix is a beautiful, kaleidoscopic journey through Benin 70s funk, 80s pop, post-punk, disco, Turkish or otherwise and everything in between.

Who are you
I am Jaakko Eino Kalevi

Where are you
At the moment I am in backstage of Bremen Teater in Copenhagen.

And what are you
I am a human and a music man and occasional show man

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us ?
It sounds like heaven

How does your brain work when making music? how does it work when you aren’t?
When I work on music it´s like meditation and when I´m not working on music I often think i should be doing something but I don´t know what. probably it´s music.

What was the first electronic record you heard and how did it make you feel?
Probably it was some Smurf dance album when I was like 5 or 6. It made me feel happy and fun.

Where was the mix recorded?
I recorded the mix at home in Athens, Greece

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
It fits to every situation. From sailing to baptism to weddings and name days. Not ideal to listen in the sewer.

What should we be wearing?
Your parents clothes

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
From vinyl to reel to reel. Often a party location inspires

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
I would say Yuka Mizuhara

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
First DJ setup was probably a 5 disc CD carousel player. Now it is 1 turntable and computer.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
I would say start

What were the first and last records you bought?
My first LP was some soviet compilation of The Doors. The latest LP was from a finnish band Modem.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
It would tasted like Gamopilafo. It’s very tasty. This complex Greek dish couples rice and various types of meat such as goat, lamb, veal, chicken, and occasionally pork. The meat is cooked separately, while the broth is later used to cook the rice, which is additionally flavoured with lemon juice and generous amounts of butter. When served, sliced meat is typically placed neatly on top of the rice, and the dish is usually accompanied by lemon wedges. Gamopilafo is also known as wedding rice, referring to the fact that the dish was only prepared and enjoyed on special occasions. It’s very tasty.

If it was an animal what would it be?
It would be an olm

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
Everything is possible to mix but together if you really want

Am I going to my dream job?
Yes

Am I being compensated fairly for the value I bring to my job?

I don’t know

Do I feel energised, rested, and confident?

I hope so. Probably not if you are asking

You just had a fight with the person you are closest to. do you not speak to them until they apologise…or do you apologise first?

I apologise always if it’s my fault. Usually it’s good to apologise, it doesn’t harm anyone. It can also just be like “I’m sorry you feel that way” kind of thing.

If you were trapped on a desert island with one other person, who would you choose? how long would it be before you eat them?

I would go there with my neighbours pet rooster Yorgos and eat him immediately.

Your doctor says you need more exercise….what do you take up for exercise?

GYM!

If you could travel in time…where in time would you go? why?

I would go back in time 26.7 billion years to the time before the universe was born just to see how that would be
