Dubbed out, monastic chants atop the holy mountain with Holy Tongue.

On the Holy Mountain, oh so high,
Where Holy Tongue sang to the sky,
In northeastern Greece, where monks all hum,
They danced to the beat of Athos Dub’s drum.

Central to their monastic glee,
They spun ’round the spires like leaves from a tree.
Eastern Orthodox chants did fill the air,
While a goat played a fiddle with marvelous flair!

The pigeons all clapped with their beaks in delight,
As the clouds formed a chorus, so fluffy and white.
And thus, in the land of the sacred and odd,
They all went to tea with a blue-footed cod!

Mount Athos, known as the “Holy Mountain,” is a monastic peninsula in northeastern Greece that has been central to Eastern Orthodox monasticism for over a thousand years. Home to around 2,000 monks, its monasteries resonate with the timeless a cappella chants that form an integral part of their prayer and worship, creating a serene atmosphere for contemplation. FLEE’s Athos: Echoes from the Holy Mountain is a project that documents and reinterprets this musical tradition, blending field recordings from the 1960s and today with modern compositions from contemporary Greek and international artists. Accompanying the music is a trilingual book featuring essays, photography, and artistic reflections, drawing contributions from scholars, monks, and artists. This release, which includes a 2xLP, digital album, and 308-page book, is a culmination of FLEE’s extensive research on Mount Athos and will be followed by exhibitions and conferences showcasing its findings.

We’re premiering the dubbed out stylings atop the mountain from the most excellent Holy Tongue.
