James Jonathan Clancy shares new Black & White video
James Jonathan Clancy, the founder of cult label Maple Death Records, erstwhile member of His Clancyness and a prolific solo artist in his own right, shares the cinematic new visual for his track ‘Black & White’, taken from his new album of alien cowboy music ‘Sprecato’.
Filmed in the Parco della Montagnola, central Bologna, one of the Red City’s oldest parks, directed by Roberto Beani and starring Micol Fontanella, Matteo Braghin, Pietro Maciotta & Tommaso D’Antrassi, the video for ‘Black & White’ marries Clancy’s spaced out cosmic folk with a lush, monochromatic depiction of youthful nocturnal wandering.
According to Clancy, the video tells the story of “three midnight ramblers, dreamers, wide-eyed, mischievous and unforgiving, buying time and escaping”.
When these three ‘marauding dreamers’ come into the possession of a mysterious visor – which seems to resemble a VR headset if reengineered by David Lynch – some very gnarly reveries ensue.
It’s a beautiful video, steeped in celluloid inspiration, evoking everything from Italian neorealism, Federico Fellini and Francis Ford Coppola’s Rumble Fish to some lost portrayal of misspent youth by Gregg Araki or Harmony Korine. A perfect fit for Clancy’s resonant, noirish psych-ballad.
