Bochum Welt – The Module 2 Listening Set Mix
Originally released on Aphex Twin’s seminal Rephlex imprint back in 1996 Bochum Welt’s (the moniker of Italian artist Gianluigi Di Costanzo) classic analogue electro album “Module 2” is getting a revamp.
Please introduce yourself…
My name is Gianluigi Di Costanzo aka Bochum Welt. I produce music for BMG, Aphex Twin’s Rephlex and Thomas Dolby’s Headspace.
Where are you
Milan / London
And what are you
Humanoid
What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
Electric, analog, far from reality, that grows emotionally
How does your brain work when making music? how does it work when you aren’t?
Outside the box, the standards. When I’m not making music, I’m a regular guy
Tell us about the reissue of Module 2 and why it’s happening now?
There was extra material that was on the album tapes and with BMG a reissue, could be taken care of in detail
What were you thinking when you created this album and what do you feel you achieved with it?
I thought about expressing how I felt, against the grain, different, I never thought about what to get, I was simply trying to express myself
Is there anything you would have changed about it?
Yes, of course, I am imperfect, but I’m happy to have expressed that moment and it remains an image that I still listen to
Why do you think music from this era has had such a lasting impact?
There was a strong desire to express ourselves and do something that would last, like it was the last thing I was going to do, like I was going to die the next day
What was the first electronic record you heard and how did it make you feel?
The first vinyl album bought was one by Trevor Horn. Thanks to my dad, I was at home with the flu and he went out and bought it for me. I was about 10 – 12 years old
Where was the mix recorded?
In my studio in Milan, it’s improvised because it was recorded in the last few hours at night time
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
During a dinner at home or on the sofa while having a drink with friends
What should we be wearing?
British or Japanese designers, vintage inspired clothing
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
Hmm, I like them all
What were the first and last records you bought?
The first album: Thomas Dolby ’The Golden Age of Wireless’.
The last one ‘Butterfly’ by Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
Japanese savoury pancakes
If it was an animal what would it be?
A dog
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
Goldberg Variations (Glenn Gould)
Am I going to my dream job?
Yes
Am I being compensated fairly for the value I bring to my job?
I try to do my best, the relative compensation will come as a consequence
Do I feel energised, rested, and confident?
Yes if I think about what I like to do
Your doctor says you need more exercise….what do you take up for exercise?
Running
If you could travel in time…where in time would you go? why?
I would go back to when I was a boy, I have so many fantastic memories and because my mood has always been heartbroken / nostalgic
Upcoming in the world of…
Future state
Anything else we need to discuss?
Where will we be in our next life?
