natebytheway: The Wednesday Alternative Mix
Natebytheway is a Berlin based, California born and raised artist who’s early music was influenced by surf rock.
Dropping self-releases via his own bandcamp and Kulture Galerie following his contribution to the labels NFTS 999 compilation his musical interests took a sharp turn when he discovered artists like Gene on Earth, Sweely, Black Loops, and many others in the realm of the good electronic.
His new EP ‘Witless Q&A’s via the Filippo MSM helmed kulture galerie this February with five original cuts. You can also find Nate working as a Barista at Berlin’s new listening bar Anima.
It’s that vibe which forms the basis for this Wednesay Alternative mix, let’s get it on and ask him a few questions eh…
Listen below:
Please introduce yourself…
Who are you…
Natebytheway
Where are you…
Berlin Based, from San Fran
What are you…
Producer and DJ
Tell us about the Wednesday alternative mixtape:
Its a collection of tunes that I wouldn’t normally play in a club that I’ve been listening to lately and a couple that I’ve created recently that aren’t house music.
If it were to be drawn what would it look like?
I think it would look like a soft line that slowly morphs in to a bunch of miniature squiggling dolphins swimming in a random pattern in a miniature ocean.
If it were a food what would it be?
Takis and good 12 year aged gouda
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
On a walk in a park or while you’re cooking a stew
What should we be wearing
Comfortable walking clothes, or a snuggie
Where was it recorded?
In my flat in Berlin
Who got you hooked on electronic music?
My friends Chris, Clancy and Tris
What are your influences:
Gene on Earth, Tini, Christian AB, Local DJ and Reflex Blue have been inspiring me a lot and I don’t have a single goal with music. I just love making it and listening to others music. I love making music mostly by myself but recently I’ve been wanting to collaborate more with friends and other artists I look up to.
What were your original aspirations:
I used to sing and play in bands in highschool and college and I always thought it would be fun to go on tour with my friends and play shows with them and basically hang out and surf and be silly. Once I got in to making electronic music, I became obsessed with how I can make tunes that make people want to dance and feel happy. Music is an escape for me and the world is hectic and I want people to feel the same escape I do when I make music.
Am I looking forward to engaging with the people i am meeting or working with?
I am meeting a lot of very nice and interesting people and I am very excited to make music with them and dance and get involved in some nonsense.
Am I going to my dream job
I am not going to my dream job but I love my job currently and I love my bosses and coworkers. They are very cool and they make me feel loved and part of a nice little community. I feel energeized and valued with my work and I feel very lucky to work in such a nice environment. By the way I’m a Barista. Stop by Anima and say hi whenever:)
If you were trapped on a desert island with one other person, who would you choose? How long would it be before you eat them?
If I was trapped on an island I would want my girlfriend Erin to be with me because I feel the most comfortable with her. I would let her eat me. If she wanted.
