Lizzy Young: Shine A Light On Mixtape
Lizzy Young’s new album, “Not That Bad,” is her love letter to everyone identifying as a woman. “I find it very complicated to be a woman, even in 2023, and I needed to talk about what I know best.”
A tribute that pulsates with energy, darkness, humour and a touch of the apocalyptic Lizzy made her mark in 2020 with her debut visual album “CooCoo Banana,” that explored mortality – Lizzy Young makes low-fi pop music, coupled with poetic and darkly humorous visuals, showcased a complex emotional intelligence.
We asked Lizzy to record us a cassetteonly mix that showcased her influences and make today just that little bit better.

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you
I’m Lizzy Young, I am in NYC, actor and musician.
What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
My music sounds like a wave of uncomfortable comfort.
Where was the mix recorded?
On my friend’s studio floor with my two tape players and all the tapes collected through the years. It took me a million years to make because tape players do whatever, whenever and often just decide to break.
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
In your kitchen.
What should we be wearing?
Whatever you like to wear, it’s really up to you in the end.
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
Anywhere but unbreakable tape players would be cool.
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
Lou Reed talking about recordings sounding as good as cds on tape.
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
Probably the mix of the guy on Myrtle Broadway in Brooklyn that sells hats and stuff, he really knows how to get the vibe going.
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
I would pick X-Coast because we actually did a back to back years ago and I emptied the whole room with some Italo disco. Failures are always memorable.
X-Coast, when you’re done hanging with Diplo you remixing my track ;)?
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
My first DJ set was with my brother when we threw parties at home, we had a mixer and some turntables. Now I have two very questionable tape decks, I only DJ tapes nowadays, that’s what I have the most of.
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
I think both, we gotta start hard and finish hard. That’s what theater taught me.
What were the first and last records you bought?
The first one was Hole, “Celebrity Skin”, the last was Tyler the Creator, “Igor”
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
A big fruity sour gummy key.
If it was an animal what would it be?
A whale
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
Probably my parents’ wedding.
Upcoming in the world of Lizzy Young
I just released my second album “Not That Bad”. Going on small tours here and there and definitely more music this summer.
Anything else we need to discuss?
Why is my cat getting fatter and fatter? Also, can someone be my booker?
