Music is the vehicle for Nathan Dawidowicz to tell a story.

But not just their story… they’re inviting you to fashion your own narrative; to draw your own conclusion.

Nathan’s personal tale has been a vibrant one. The son of a Polish-Lithuanian mother and Cameroonian father, they moved to Jerusalem at the age of six from their birthplace of Milan. Whilst growing up in a Jewish ultra-orthadox community, they dreamed of moving away to become a musician and fashion designer, which became a reality when they moved back to Italy and broke the constraints of the religious environment they’d been raised in.

Fashion became their academic pursuit but music was ever-present, a sonic remedy that brought them life. It had been a constant, from their childhood years spent playing piano to the influence of their father who spent time as a DJ during the 80s and 90s in Milan. Soon enough sound became a way of exploring the art of story-telling and this journey took them to their now home of Berlin.

Here they connected with Luspoderosa, a label based between Zurich and Berlin that isn’t afraid to colour outside the lines. This platform would become the home for Nathan’s debut solo album Sanctuary of Ideas – a deeply personal, psychedelic and cosmic dive into their memories, journey, reflections and heritage.

Off the back of the release we invited Nathan to open up their sonic world to us even more with a mix of hypnotic and atmospheric new wave, Italo, acid and deep rhythmic excursions. Don your pyjamas and your fluffy slippers and sink into it…

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

Hi, I am Nathan, a work in progress who is trying to figure out life through music.

What does your music sound like?

It would be rude of me to ruin the plot with words for those who haven’t yet listened or to impose my narrative on those who have already listened, so I will politely invite you to listen and create your own story…

Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Where was the mix recorded?

In my studio.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

In a beautiful and semi-dark odd-shaped room, tall pink sealings, dreamy orange lights, an altered state of mind, and your loved one/s by your side.

What should we be wearing?

Your most elegant pajama and furry slippers.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

In an intimate warehouse party with a handful of besties, gigantic windows, smoke, and some beautiful big wooden warm-sounding HI-FI speakers.

Which track in the mix is your current favorite?

“Aadhaar” by A. Sivamani. It is the last track in the mix. I would recommend you listen to the whole album. It is truly bigger than life!

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

It is difficult to have a “favorite of all time” when time is changing so fast, but I think that existence would be far less beautiful without the mixes of: Alicia Carrera, Andrè Pahl, Mr. Monday and Oscar Der Winzige.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

With a time machine at my disposal, I wouldn’t mind going back to the 80s and 90s in Milan to check out what my father was up to behind the decks, and perhaps even to spin a record or two with him.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

It started around 10 years ago with a controller, one turntable, and a cheap mixer. Now it consists of two turntables, a cute rotary mixer, and one cdj.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Hard to say, but I feel that oftentimes, the second or third track has a more incisive mark on my mixes than the first one.

What were the first and last records you bought?

The first records I ever received as a gift, were from a friend of my father. She wanted me to play at her exhibition, and she paid me with a bag full of 12 inches and 45’s. One of them was “Manuel Göttsching – Inventions For Electric Guitar”. My mind remained blown ever since…

As far as my latest discoveries go, I am currently exploring the discography of Suns of Arqa, which puts me in a state of constant euphoria.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

A mushroom.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A snow monkey.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

I don’t believe in the concept of “impossible” when it comes to mixing. If I love it, I will find a way to blend it.

A new collaboration album between Juri Corrado and myself under our duo name JUNA. The album is entitled “Archetipo”, and will be released via the label Serenades at the end of the month…
