Electronic bass riffs with Sha Ru

Sha Ru is the coming together of NYC producer Ma Sha and Berlin artist Rù.

Geographically they may be far apart but musically – and in vibrant hair colours – they’re very much on the same page.

Their music is distinguished by energy and tension. A shared love of UK bass, breaks, electro and DnB feeds into their synthesis of frenetic broken beats, chopped vocals and gnarly bass lines, which have formed releases for Infinite Machine, Pressure Dome, Shubzin and Ma Sha’s own Kindergarten Records, among others.

Following the release of their latest EP V.O.I.D. on London’s Inveterate label, they’ve been playing a run of live gigs across Europe, touching down in Lyon, Rome and Belgrade – next up it’s Saint-Etienne for Positive Education Festival which we’ll be making the trip over to later this week.

In anticipation of their live performance on Friday night, we asked the pair to select some tracks that put their favourite musical element front and centre – the bass line.

“Currently a bass riff tends to act as the main melodic element in our music productions. It’s one of the most memorable ingredients in many songs for us. So below we’ve chosen a selection of tracks from producers we admire, and from friends and family, all of which showcase the power of the bassline :)”

Mysterious and hypnotic. Definitely the most sexy bass riff on this playlist.
Christian Coiffure - Trees Used To Speak At Dawn (Yushh Remix)

We admire how Yushh is mixing dub techno atmospheres with futuristic sound design, thus creating a modern version of the genre. Multiple basslines are speaking to each other on top of the steady rhythm while narrating a beautiful story.
Hassan Abou Alam - Breathe

We love how Hassan Abou Alam is using a bass riff to create moments of excitement in the composition. This bassline melody is one you keep singing for days in your head.
Sonia Calico - Hougong Crash

This is a perfect example of how a bass riff can tight together all the unique sound design elements. It is a great secret card when we reach the more wild part of our sets.
Oswald - Lord of the Buss

“Lord of the Buss” is often present in our sets. It is a perfect crowd buster! The low end of this track is also one of our most used references for mixing our music production.
