Nommo Hunzuu keeps himself somewhat shrouded in mystery.

His passion for collecting and playing strange and cerebral sounds was first fuelled by his tenure during the 90s and early 00s behind the counter at a Kent-based record shop.

These discoveries have soundtracked dance floors at clandestine parties across the county, and more recently at Niburu, the London party he held a residency at alongside fellow DJ Terry Childs.

It was at these parties that he found himself warming up the floor for a wealth of like-minded contemporaries, including Linkwood, Lord Of The Isles, Justin Cudmore and Sharif Laffrey. His sets oscillate between darkness and light, sometimes otherworldly and at others heady, sketching a journey through everything from beatless ambient, drone and electronica to new wave, Kosmiche, techno and electro.

Away from the dance floor Nommo Hunzuu released a C60 mixtape cassette entitled ‘Drinnen Traum’ on LA label Origin Peoples, which offered an alternative soundtrack to the world of Twin Peaks.

His Monday mix offers a similarly immersive trip. If you’re in need of some sonic-based R&R this morning (I can tell you we all are post-Houghton), then this carefully curated two hours of music is exactly what the doctor ordered. Tune in, drift off and let the blissful vibrations and celestial soundscapes wash over you… You’ll forget it’s Monday in no time.

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you, what are you?

Hello. My name is Henry, presently in Forest Gate, East London. I’m a sentient carbon-based lifeform called human, experiencing the chaos and magic of the universe.

Tell us about the Monday mixtape you’ve put together for us.

Hopefully it serves as an escape from the maelstrom of a world gone wrong. Serene, stimulating, provoking, with ethereal vibrations and otherworldly emanations.

If it were to be drawn what would it look like?

An imperfect circle filled with all the colours, scribbled in crayon, with some glitter for good measure.

If it were a food what would it be?

Fresh gazpacho, sipped on a balmy summer evening.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Any time, or place, the need to chill comes a-calling.

What should we be wearing?

A smile on a relaxed face.

Where was it recorded?

The mix was captured in Deptford, South East London.

Are you on the same wavelength as the Boomtown Rats, or do you actually like Mondays?

Calendars are constructs as control systems, linear time is an illusion. Be in the infinite flow.

Who got you hooked on electronic music?

Three names that initially dominated my heady early 90s period of electronic music were The KLF, The Orb, and Orbital.

What was the first electronic record you heard and how did it make you feel?

‘Man Machine’ by Kraftwerk got regular spins on the household hi-fi when I was a wee nipper, it sounded like nothing else played on radio and TV; the old yarn of witnessing the future.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First purchase was Streetsounds ‘NY vs LA Beats’ on cassette, with paper round money in 1986. The last record was a secondhand copy of Raymond Richards’ ‘The Lost Art Of Wandering’ LP. Latest download was Maria Somerville’s ‘All My People’ album on Bandcamp.

What are you obsessed with at the moment?

Imagining life without one of the senses, usually deafness or blindness.

If you could travel in time… where in time would you go? Why?

To quote Harry Dean Stanton as Carl Rodd “I’ve already gone places, I just want to stay where I am.” I’m completely content with here and now.

Some self help questions for a Monday…

Am I excited to dive into the challenges that I have lined up for the week?

The usual approach is to glide on through, whatever prevents itself, bring it on, within reason.

Am I looking forward to engaging with the people I am meeting or working with?

Yeah! My colleagues are all wonderful humans.

Am I going to my dream job?

No such thing! Remunerated time and labour is a contrived transaction rooted in an archaic society.
*please don’t sack me

Am I being compensated fairly for the value I bring to my job?

Fortunately I set my rate of pay, so, yeah for sure.

Do I feel energised, rested, and confident?

Caffeinated, slightly floaty, and quietly confident.

If you were trapped on a desert island with one other person, who would you choose? How long would it be before you eat them?

The facetious answer is my daft Jack Russell Terrier, he’s hilarious. This is a tough one… hmmm… Kim Gordon. I think she’d be fascinating and inspiring to shoot the breeze with for an unknown period of time. My diet is 99.9% plant-based so absolutely no cannibalism, even in a life or death situation.

Your doctor says you need more exercise… what do you take up for exercise?

Tai Chi, swimming, and cycling.

What’s your answer to everything?

If “everything” is the question, the answer is “7430”.

Anything else we need to discuss?

Peace on earth. The future of cooking with magnets. Ditching social media. Voyager 1’s strange data. OOBEs and NDEs. Non-duality and quantum entanglement. Scopaethesia. Meltwater Pulse 1A.
