Playlist: Music To Cut Hair To with Adele Carmichael
A virtual friendship blossoms, as Adele Carmichael selects music by Biosphere, Aleksi Perala, Michael J Blood and more.
A trip to About This Place hair studios is rarely just purely functional.. Hairdressers can often end up being confidante’s. It’s all about the setting too, so is there more annoying than bad music? it’s unacceptable.
Bad music is only an interruption of what we believe the salon atmosphere should be. This why ‘Music to cut hair to’ was created. Here at the ATP Studios, headed by the Hair Mistress aka Victoria Saunders has perfected that blend.
She cuts the hair of half the DJs in London and many of the people in the background of this wonderful industry. The reason they keep coming back, aside from a damn fine cut, is the fact the music is spot on – hence being asked by R$N to compile a feature for them.
Music To Cut Hair To, a selection of some great music played in the salon alongside some appearances from friends…
“For my next playlist I’d like to welcome Adele Carmichael. One of the most esteemed Dj’s from the Amateurism Radio Collective. For me the playlist is EPIC. Perfect for playing in the studios at this time of year.. but I see myself in headphones looking at the stars.. I can’t wait for that moment. Having never met Del in IRL, we have built a lovely internet friendship that consists of places, animals and MUSIC. Doesn’t it always bring people together?? Adele I look forward to that moment our paths cross but until then I salute you and your wonderful other worldly music.”
• WHEN WERE YOU AT YOUR HAPPIEST?
Oooo this is a tricky one, probably when I was around ten? Like totally carefree happy. These days I find pockets of happiness, like going for daily walks and being around nature. Visiting old friends, being with my little family, listening to music – all pockets of happy.
• WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST FEAR?
Death, in a nutshell, or being put to sleep! So much so I had my wisdom teeth taken out with injection as the thought of being put to sleep is harrowing for me.
• WHO DO YOU ADMIRE?
My closest people, my family – especially the past few years.
• WHAT TRAIT DO YOU DEPLORE IN YOURSELF/OTHER PEOPLE?
Injustice, can not hack injustice.
• WHAT’S YOUR WORST HABIT?
Worrying about the unknown, like really working myself up about things I can’t control. I am quite an emotional person and my rational side is always trying to see me right but it never usually works!
• FAVOURITE WORD?
More of an expression around my way “Eeeeeeeeeee” – always makes me giggle.
• WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY SORRY TO?
Erm, probably my parents for being a bit wild in my late teens?
• WHO DO YOU DESPISE?
Oddly no one, I have (annoyingly) a habit of trying to get to the root of why people may act horribly or what caused it? I am not sure why I do that, years of therapy I would imagine.
• WHO OR WHAT IS THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE?
Being with my people, nature is my one big love for sure.
• WHAT WOULD IMPROVE YOUR LIFE?
A decent sleep pattern!
• WORST JOB YOU HAVE EVER DONE?
Offt, many a job! Probably when I was a student working with an agency and having to do days in meat factories (I didn’t last long).
• WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT?
Being alive so far! My life has been weird – in a good way, so just getting through somehow!
• WHAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE AT NIGHT?
Everything!! Honestly, sleep is my enemy at the moment.
• HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED?
For being an alright person? I think everyone wants that? I still hope to do something in my time on this Earth. I would hope my playlists have helped people in some way?
• WHAT LESSONS HAS LIFE TAUGHT YOU?
Be prepared! Always, for anything! Wet wipes are also handy in your bag!
• WHAT WOULD YOUR SUPER POWER BE?
Oh to fly, definitely – imagine!
• FAVOURITE SMELL?
Spring flowers! Or walking past a jasmine/honeysuckle and getting a surprise waft of sweet floral.
• WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN A FILM?
Chloë Sevigny is an idol of mine! Although I would be pretty buzzing for anyone really!
• WHAT SONG WOULD YOU LIKE PLAYED AT YOUR FUNERAL?
Hunted By A Freak – Mogwai – or the whole of the ‘Boards Of Canada live at The Truman brewery’ haha I’d love to be a fly on the wall – I hope I can somehow!
• TOP TIP?
Be nice, always.
• TELL US A SECRET?
I love Alan Titchmarsh! Not in a weird way, his programs are just proper bonnie and cheery.
I have a weekly two-hour radio show on Future Radio 107.8 called ‘The Slabcity Show’ – Also a monthly slot on the eclectic ‘Slacks Radio’ Channel called ‘Stealth’ and am part of the Amateurism Radio crew.
