Black Cadmium: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix

Hailing from Rotterdam, Black Cadmium is the moniker of DJs, producers and radio hosts Joginda Macnack and Jermaine Richards.

Drawing influence from acid, techno and electro, and the London to Detroit connection, the pair have already built a solid discography over the last year or two, finding homes on the likes of Ovum Recordings, Vault Wax and more recently Carista’s United Identities and Violet’s Naïve imprint.

For their ‘Shine A Light On’ mix they share music from their favourite artists and labels, including Nous’Klaer, Omnidisc, Jaye Sound and Interplanetary Criminal, as well as a handul of the labels they’ve previously released music on. A deep, cosmic ride through squelchy 303s, cavernous electro and euphoric techno, it’s clear that Black Cadmium have arrived and we’ll be seeing much more of them in the future…

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

Mike: My name is Mike Jermaine Richards, at the moment I’m at my day job which is in health care and I’m a very passionate person and I love being a vessel for music. Pretty much what I live for. Main things in life are my family and music.
 
Joginda: My name is Joginda Macnack and at this moment I’m spending too much money on new music on Juno, Bandcamp, Clone Records and Beatport. That’s what I do mostly in this weird period of time. Next to sitting in the studio with Mike and being a husband and a dad.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Like endless reflections of our inner worlds.

Where was the mix recorded?

At Beats Per Minute Studio in Rotterdam.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Could be anywhere. We do get messages from listeners saying they exercise to our music (lol).

What should we be wearing?

We’d say your astronaut suit or spandex.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Somewhere under a very pleasant sun and near a beach. We’re both children of the sun. A Function One sound system will do, add 2 turntables, a mixer and 2 CD players and get ready for take off. 

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

That’s a tricky question. This set only contains tracks from our favorite labels like Vaultwax, Nous’Klaer, Omnidisc, Naïve and United Indentities, to name a few, and producers like Blorp Music, Octo Octa, Danny Daze, Yaleesa hall, Interplanetary Criminal, 30303 and Beyun. But if we both really have to choose one, Jay Sound – Oceane Drive (track on his new album) and the new Dean Grenier – Nowhere Man (Released on Omnidisc) are our favorites without discounting the rest.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

The people who really know us, know which mix it is and has inspired us to play how we play. For now, let’s just leave it in the middle. All we can say is, it’s a mix from the 90s.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

We can name a couple but we’ll go for Jeff Mills. Why? You ask… Cause he’s the wizard and we love magic.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

We started with 3 sl 1200’s and the Pioneer DJM 600. Now we still use the sl’s but added 2 CDJ 2000’s and a DJM 900NXS.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

We like to look at a set as a whole with more than two pivotal moments. It also depends on your set time. But when you’re the closer… then we’d say the last track.

What were the first and last records you bought?

Mike: First: Silicone Soul – Chicola (H Foundation Mix) / Last: Moses Boyd – 2 Far Gone ft Joe Armon-Jones
 
Joginda: First: Mr Lee – Get Busy / Last: No idea. Too many to mention

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

An apple in the garden of Eden or like a vegetarian pom (Classic Surinam dish)

If it was an animal what would it be?

Bonobo

Mike: 30303 – Acid Sun

2020 has been a terrible year on so many levels but we’re humbled by the fact that we’ve been able to achieve our goals. No one in our circle got irreversibly ill which was a blessing. Our goals for 2021 have been set and we’re eager to keep working on them. We’ve always been passionate about music and we believe now is the time to show it. Hello world, we are Black Cadmium…
