Lauri Soini: The ‘Wednesday Alternative’ Mix
Helsinki is a music scene which has grown in prominence and might over the years, Lauri Soini is a hugely active figure in the local community operating as a member of the team behind Flow festival and as a booker at reputable club Kaiku. He has also been a driving force behind the more eclectic party scene in the city for a long time and tells a tall tale of loft parties in towerblocks belonging to the Northern city.
From a musical perspective he is well versed, having dabbled in absolutely all sorts over a lifetime spent in dance and creative spaces. In the present he finds himself more attached to funk, soul, disco, boogie and Italo – the type of music which sounds great on a well built soundsystem and best accompanied by friends in the midst of the after hours.
We invited Lauri to record a mix which he does with good vibes aplenty and a nice interview to follow suit.

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?
My name is Lauri , I'm at Helsinki, Finland and I'm a Disc Jockey
What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
Yesterday I saw a dog jumping on a christmas tree so I'd say that is my current vibe.
Where was the mix recorded?
At my apartment
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
Dancing a bit (without shoes) at home and holding a hot chocolate in a cozy setting on a holiday vibe, put on a scented candle
What should we be wearing?
Socks
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
In a mountain lodge with fire , with fresh air outside and speak easy after ski mood with friends inside to play for
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
Aquarius – The Seafarers
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
Many of my all time favorite mixes are from CBS and Intergalactic FM which inspired to record this one
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
Most of the times I prefer to DJ alone unless its not a jazz disco battle mix
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
1200's and mixer , now it's same all though mixer is DJR-400
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
When DJing I think the interesting music usually happens in early hours but ending is important aswell especially I'm a fan of a happy endings, get-together moments, smiles and dancing with each other
What were the first and last records you bought?
First record I got was Batman soundtrack by Prince which my mom gave to me for christmas, recent 12" is the Danny Krivit "Stuff" edit from Quincy Jones – Stuff Like That
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
Rosolli – A traditional root vegetable salad from Finland which includes beetroot, carrot, potato, cucumber, onion and apple.
If it was an animal what would it be?
A dancing Star Fish
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
You can mix in anything if you have a little bit of castanets and cowbells on the next record!
