A small bird sat upon the fence chirping its song; a morning ritual that welcomed in the day. The woman had been gazing at it out of the window studying its every move. It looked so free and peaceful. She longed to feel that way, to be comfortable in the outside world among the birds, among the people, but something wouldn't let her. As she went to leave the window, it caught her eye. It was as if it were singing to just her and only her. Maybe this was a sign of encouragement, a nudge to embrace the outside world after so long inside. As she stepped out the door the sun hit her face and she smiled deeply. She felt as light as a feather, as if the gentle breeze could wisk her off her feet at any given moment. This was what she'd been missing…

Hardware soundscapes courtesy of Manchester's machine queen Sarah Bates. A close member of Ruf Dug's Ruf Kutz family, it was at their takeover at Gottwood festival this summer that these blissful ambient productions were first heard by Banoffee Pies, who then invited Sarah to release some of them on their Sonder Series sub-label. The result is Fantasy Modulation, six tracks all performed and recorded live…
