8 Tracks: Of Eye To Eye With Stash Magnetic

Stash Magnetic are a three-piece live act melding diverse influences into their own very unique electronic sound. Szymek Lawik, Nick Riggio and Rebecca Magnetic blend the subcultures of Electro, Dark Wave and Psychedelia to create driving dancefloor music and they will be bringing their live act to Grow Tottenham on the 25th August for a very special party. We caught up with them to ask them for 8 tracks that define their vision.

Hey Joe - Patti Smith

Patti is a powerful female force who cut her chops on the NYC punk scene, which I was drawn to as a little kid like a moth to a flame. Her spoken word intro about a controversial heiress turned guerilla gunwoman, sets up her Hendrix cover to dig deep into your soul. Questions, truth seeking, psychedelic Velvet Underground guitars. All major influences on me for Stash Magnetic.

  • Siouxsie And The Banshees - Spellbound

    The tribal beat running through this song and the low register of Siouxsie’s bold voice cast a spell on me. Her theatrical presentation combining punk fashion with old Hollywood glamour is as influential on me as the song. Style and substance equalised. Sound & vision unified.

  • Funkadelic - Maggot Brain [Hq]

    Nick (Stash Magnetic) switched me on to this song when I was still in school. Living close to Detriot, George Clinton was influential. This band was from Outer Space! This song is not about technique, it’s one long soul searching guitar solo. Gutwrenchingly good.

  • Prince "Annie Christian" '82 Punk Version

    Politically challenging, this song combines genres, fashion and sexuality in a new way and brings it to the dance floor. The spirit of Stash Magnetic worships at the church of Prince.

  • Drexciya - You Don't Know

    Moving to London from the Midwest (USA) my perspective changed on what was happening musically back home- Midwesterners using European influences to create a new genre. UR has a political undertone that resonates with me creatively.

  • Dick Hyman - The Minotaur

    This album was in my family record collection and I adopted it for myself- it creatively activated me. The liner notes are amazing. I started taking apart headphones to create makeshift pickups to electrify my acoustic guitar. I made tape loop echos on my Dad’s reel to reel. I declared myself a musician.

  • Sfire - Sfire2

    I dont think a track has gotten me as excited as this one when i first heard it. The blend of heavy gated snares, rubbery bass lines and infectious synth hooks that make you just wanna melt into the dance floor

    Synth-Pop perfection.

  • Nitzer Ebb Hearts And Minds (Mix Hypersonic)

    Production value is absolutely timeless on this. Filthy EBM floor stomper. This is one band I wish I could go back in time to see play live. With the energy just from the record, i cannot imagine what it must of been like to witness the performance. With that in mind I want to deliver that high level at a Stash Magnetic gig.
