Retiree: The ‘Monday Is Okay’ Mix

Music

Next month Rhythm Section International will release an album from Australian three man outfit Retiree. The long form assortment of abstract cuts and intriguing twists has a conceptual nature and has allowed the group to focus on a variety of themes whilst exploring the deinition of "house" and "home". The group is made up of Matt Crowley, Tori Holleman and Marco Vella who each compose various elements on the new forthcoming LP. Bradley Zero, the man behind Rhythm Section, has long since formed a close bond with the Australian musical community and has regularly championed upcoming artists from the country. Their appearance makes sense.

We invited the group to record a mix for us which features music by the likes of Visible Cloaks, Gerry Read and Tori Holleman.

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

Hi,
I’m Marco sitting at my desk at home, that’s Matt, he’s all the way over there at his home in Randwick and over there about 900km away is Tori and we are Retiree, a three piece band that make music together when we get the chance to.

What does your music sound like?

A road trip across Australia to a lindrum beat.

Tell us about the Monday mixtape you’ve put together for us.

It’s made up of mostly recent releases we’re into at the moment. A few tracks are from great local artists as well as a few of our favourite ones from overseas. It’s a mixture of all the styles of music we appreciate as a band and what influences our writing process. It’s also a bit of an ease into the week mix 🙂

If it were to be drawn what would it look like?

A bowl of spaghetti at the bottom of a lap pool.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Walking with headphones.

Where was it recorded?

It was recorded at Marco’s home studio with a view overlooking Harmony Park.

Who got you hooked on electronic music?

For me (Marco), I remember listening to my dad and mums records as a kid and being mainly intrigued by the sound of synthesisers. They were mainly disco or pop records like Michael Jackson and the B52s that had fascinating synth sounds and melodies. As I got older I was heavily infatuated with the synth sounds and production from Cut Copy, MGMT, The Presets and the rest of the classic Indi electro bands circa 2005-2006. I then delved into deeper sounding electronic music, anywhere from house, trance, techno and ambient stuff.

What were the first and last records you bought?

The first records I bought I actually stole from my old man (thanks dad!) which were all late 70s, early 80s disco records and the last couple I bought are Malcolm McLarens 1984 album, Fans and another copy of Lynn Goldsmith’s 1983 album, Dancing for Mental Health. Both classics that were too well priced to say no to at the local op-shop.

What are you obsessed with at the moment?

Pretty obsessed with watching youtube video compilations involving Mbappe and Neymar’s diving theatrics at the World Cup in Russia.
