8 Tracks: Of Afro-Latin Records With Ben Hauke

South London producer Ben Hauke's new release is billed as "a sonic excursion to South America via Lewisham". Out 20th July via Far Out Recordings, Only Old combines Afro-Latin percussion with a distinctly London-centric mix of house, broken beat and instrumental hip-hop, and serves as another brilliant showcase for his supreme sampling chops.

Like many of the records on the list, I first came across it with the intention of sampling it. Over the years I ended up listening and respecting them so much I find it hard to sample from the artists… sometimes…
Ray Barretto - Que Viva La Musica

Another great percussionist and band leader. Some great moments throughout this LP, particularly in the horn sections.

Easy choice, everything about this.
Jorge Ben - Força Bruta

I don’t own this record but it’s the first track that gets me the most.
Madlib - Flight To Brazil

Obviously Madlib is from the USA, not South America. However he is a huge influence on me and on my latest release with Far Out Recordings so it would be mad not to mention this album.
Jazzanova - Fedime's Flight

Again, these guys are from Berlin, but I love playing this track in sets.
Bebob Dawg - Rumble In Rio

Last but not least, this record is my secret weapon and has helped me out when trying to figure out a crowd. I bought this for £1 years ago in Vinyl Deptford, I still don’t know anything about the artists on it!
