Influences: K’Alexi

Music

Chicago’s K’Alexi was destined for dance music greatness. Befriending Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy at an early age whilst frequenting the famous Warehouse, it seemed that the status as a genuine, non-hyperbolic house pioneer which he currently enjoys was his by birthright. He may never have matched Mr Knuckles’ status as a household name, but to call the man that even Daft Punk described as a teacher an ‘unsung hero’ wouldn’t be entirely fair or accurate.

Here, the man Daft Punk described as a teacher reveals who taught him…

K'Alexi's So Chicago EP is out via Seth Troxler's Play It Say It imprint on July 13th. Troxler and The Martinez Brothers' imprint will then release Dark Smiles Vol 1 on July 27th, another K'Alexi EP.

Martin Circus - Disco Circus

One of my all-time favourites, mostly because it’s just raw, unforgiving/unapologetic vocals & music. It’s just another great sound work by the French…

  • Martin Circus - Disco Circus

One of my all-time favourites, mostly because it’s just raw, unforgiving/unapologetic vocals & music. It’s just another great sound work by the French…

  • Risque Iii - Essence Of A Dream

The first real vocal work where I gave the world a glimpse inside my soul any really gave birth to that poetic house style that many would mimic. Two true facts about it: when I mention a line about a “Golden shower” I didn’t know what it was, I just thought it sounded cool and it was about a real girl, but more about how I wanted her to be.

  • Fingers Inc. - Distant Planet

I mean wow! The lyrics alone are just so wonderful but when you add it with the music it becomes the perfect marriage & I still to this day get so lost in it.

  • Loleatta Holloway - Hit And Run (Walter Gibbons 12" Remix)

This is just such deep soulful disco loveliness & when I had my Sunday night service residency at Chicago’s warehouse I would NEVER go a full night with playing this.

  • Dj Rolando - Jaguar (Original Mix)

For this to be an instrumental, I find it speaks loud & clear with the sweet melodies on top of each other. Plus, done by another Detroit legend.

  • Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes (Radioarchive Rmx)

This was – & still is for me – a true masterpiece that makes it impossible to stay still & when played on the proper system. I dare you to try.

  • Joe Smooth - Promised Land

Well, this just makes me smile ’cause it’s just a feel-good, wonderful work of art, but knowing the person who did it, I know that was the message intended because Joe is now as he was then: just a beautiful human being.

  • Glenn Underground - Indians & Bagpipes (K Alexi Copy)

Now if for some silly reason you don’t know his name, the title of the song alone will make you want to hear. Glenn is just one of the most talented & music-dedicated people that I know. Plus, like him & other super creative producers, I find myself with insomnia trying to be just like them. Do yourself a favour and play this really LOUD.
