Ben Chatwin: The ‘Monday Is Okay’ Mix
Based in South Queensferry, Scotland – Ben Chatwin is a producer and musician whom has been naturally drawn towards the abstract, the ethereal and the darkness of ambient soundscapes. This month he will release a new album which is titled "Staccato Signals" – a moody deep rooted collection of tracks which casts a hypnotic spell. He has been releasing music for nine years both under his own name and as Talvihorros – each outing has allowed him to expand upon an intricate lineage of musical development and self exploration. Blending elements of the acoustic with electronic he has asserted himself as a singular connoisseur. Happy Monday!
Listen and read the interview below:
Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?
Im a music making human called Ben Chatwin. Im in my home studio called 'The Vennel' on what is the hottest day of the year so far – I should probably go outside.
What does your music sound like?
Atoms Colliding / Contradictions
Tell us about the Monday mixtape you’ve put together for us.
It features mostly recent tracks that I found inspiring during the recording process for my new album 'Staccato Signals'. Also includes the work of both Mika Vainio and Johann Johannsson as they have had a huge impact on me as a composer – I have felt their loss a great deal.
If it were to be drawn what would it look like?
John Martin – The Plains of Heaven
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
Somewhere in nature, maybe high up a hill watching the first light of a new day break.
Where was it recorded?
At The Vennel where youll usually find me.
Who got you hooked on electronic music?
It was my mate Matt I met in my late teens – he was well into Warp and Rephlex stuff – hearing that whole world for the first time blew my mind.
What were the first and last records you bought?
First was the tape of Use Your Illusion II by Guns N Roses when I was about 9 or 10 and the last was Caterina Barbieri's mesmerising 'Patterns of Consciousness'. Probably fair to say both are quite a different listening experience.
What are you obsessed with at the moment?
The 50 hertz hum that emits from the power grid – essentially the sound of electricity, ive been using it to make music.
