India Jordan: The Monday Abstract Mix
Today's mix comes courtesy of none other than India Jordan. For the uninitiated, the London-based DJ hosts a bi-monthly show called 'The Sound Of…' on Radar – each one based around a different concept which is then explained in further detail on her blog.
India also co-runs New Atlantis – a monthly ambient/new age Sunday social at Rye Wax in Peckham. The event has now grown into a label as well, and the first release – New Atlantis Volume 1 – is out now. It's a cassette compilation featuring music from the likes of Throwing Shade, Deadboy, Yamaneko and India herself, and the plan is that each artist on the tape will also get a full release of their own.
Stick your feet up with a cuppa and let India's mix carry you through the rest of Monday.
Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you, what are you?
I’m India Jordan, Doncaster born but London based DJ/dabbling producer/ New Atlantis label runner.
Tell us about the Monday mix you’ve put together for us.
It’s a mixture of pleasant and unpleasant sounds, varying intensity, moving between being welcoming and alien. It reminds me a bit of the sun being out and then the clouds setting in and it all going a bit cold and breezy, then the sun coming out again.
Where was it recorded?
In my bedroom in Dalston.
Can you draw what you think it sounds like?
If it were a food what would it be?
Salt and vinegar Tyrrells crisps dipped in houmous.
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
On a train that goes through lots of different environments, preferably with fields and then barren areas with lots of rocks and then through some hills and mountains that have a little bit of snow left on top.
What should we be wearing?
A knitted woolly jumper that gets a bit itchy after a while.
Who got you hooked on electronic music?
I’m not sure who in particular, but my mum facilitated a lot of my journey into electronic music by buying me lots of Ministry of Sound Trance Anthems & Euphoria CDs etc., for Christmas and my birthdays, so thanks mum!
What was the first electronic record you heard and how did it make you feel?
My favourite electronic tune when I was about 12 was a remix of Depeche Mode – Enjoy the Silence called Mike Koglin – The Silence (Tekara Mix by Matt Darey). I listened to it on repeat for about a year and then I got really into the Bonkerz compilations. I used to love anything that was high speed & intense, not much has changed now except I also like stuff on the opposite ends of the spectrum!
What were the first and last records you bought?
First vinyl was probably Billion Dollar Gravy by London Elektricity. Last was Strange Lagoon Found At Nightfall by Fluorescent Heights (cassette).
What are you obsessed with at the moment?
Juggling! My partner and I started learning about 2 months ago and now we have a juggling Instagram doing stupid stuff, check it out. I had a little juggle whilst recording the mix too.
What's your answer to everything?
JUST JUGGLE
Anything else we need to discuss?
