Review: Francis Inferno Orchestra – Oasis
As a country, Australia isn't a place that is synonomous with forward thinking, progressive music. So when an artist from down under comes to our attention, it's usually for a pretty damn good reason. Cut Copy and Flume are two that instantly spring to mind, who have managed to transcend the ocean and have global success.
Another artist commanding our attention is Melbournian Francis Inferno Orchestra. It's been a year since he released the dreamy and driving Harmony on his own imprint Superconcious Records- co-founded with his pal Fantastic Man- and into our collective conciousness. FIO's influences are clear in his output; from classic house, to disco and beyond. He has fast become a mainstay on Melbourne's ever expanding, underground scene.
His latest release- Oasis and A Time- is a tantalising two-sider. The Celestial Body remix of the titular track is reminiscent of early rave music with its 90s, acid-house-esque drum.
This 90s theme and influence pulsates through the record and flows into the Erotikk Mix- a sultry and sensual slow-jam, perfect for afterhours or the bedroom. Evoking feelings of nostalgic longing for some classic, 90s RnB.
The B-side, Mating Rituals of the Eastern Suburbs, is "a devoted chant to the humble inhabitants of the Burwood suburb of Melbourne." It's a darker affair charged with tribal chanting and drums, and clattering, industrial cymbals.
A well orchestrated release and a statement of intent.
Keepn on top of all things FIO HERE.
