Serial Experiments: The ‘Monday Is Okay’ Mix
This week we welcome back Vilmantas, who hosts the successful Serial Experiments podcast series. The podcast has recently seen sets from Dimitri Veimar, Borusiade and It's A Fine Line joining an already stellar cast of guests. About time we showcased the man himself then eh, so here he brings us a suitable selection for your start of the week, and a few quickfire questions too:
Please introduce yourself…
Who are you, where are you and what are you
Hi, I'm Vilmantas, a guy behind Serial Experiments and part of whypeopledance collective. I'm responsible for the first hour of Serial Experiments layers and other mixes, but while DJ'ing most of the time I'm not alone, I'm together with Karolis from WPD. I'm in my rented room in Kaunas, writing this and trying to upload the mix on an extremely slow speed. It's my second time doing a mix for the Ransom Note, thank you guys for inviting me again!
What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
Or, here's how it sounds, literally:
Quick fire questions:
If your sound was a visual thing, what would it look like?
Somewhere between Tarkovsky and Kubrick, with a lot of bits and pieces from other great directors of cinema.
What was the music of your teenage rebellion?
Electroclash. Mixed with Joy Division.
First and last record bought?
Just a few days ago, I finally bought Jan Reimerd's 'The Point of No Return', the first record on this mix and I kept forgetting to buy it for a long time.
What’s been the funniest moment of your life so far?
Off the top of my head, I can't come up with just one, but there have been quite a few accidents or near accidents that I find very funny when I think back, for some reason. Maybe I'm too much into black humor?
What’s the best piece of music you’ve ever heard?
That's impossible to answer, but it wouldn't be something that you can dance to. Too many to choose from…
What’s your favourite place on earth?
Berlin seems like a great place, but since I haven't traveled that much I can't really say for sure – would love to visit some more exotic places, and Japan for example.
Complete the sentence: I'm proper techno because…..
in my world disco can be just as techno as a pure techno track – if that makes sense at all.
What's the most techno thing you've ever done?
Just recently, I was trying to edit a classical film soundtrack to a 4×4 beat, sounded so off yet also weirdly good.
When did you last stick your head in a bass bin?
Back at my home a few weeks back, trying to repair a sub… But it wasn't working.
Are you a kick drum, hi hat or a snare? And why?
Kick, snare, repeat – I am a combination of these two, sometimes it's enough when one of these sounds great, but when they both stand out it's way more pleasant!
