33 People Confirmed Dead After Oakland Warehouse Fire

The number of people confirmed dead after the fire at the 'Ghost Ship' warehouse party in Oakland on Friday 2 December has risen to 33. Oakland Officials have stated that this figure is expected to rise as over half of the building remains to be searched.

The venue and artist's collective space had been hosting a party by Los Angeles based house label 100% Silk on the night. Over 50 people are said to have been in the venue at 11 30 pm when the fire broke out.

Oakland’s mayor Libby Schaaf has described the fire as “immense tragedy”. 100% Silk took to their Facebook page to comment. They said: “We are a very tight community of artists and we are all praying, sending love and condolences to everyone involved and their families.”

'Ghost Ship' had been under investigation by the Oakland Planning and Building Department had for "structural deficiencies". The venue has been described as crucial to the city's underground culture, a scene that is becoming more and more reliant on DIY spaces due to lack of affordable housing. 

A donation page has been set up by the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts to help families of those affected by the fire.  A YouCaring donation page has also been set up by sports teams The Oakland A’s and Oakland Raiders through which they will match donations up to $30,000. The Golden State Warriors NBA team will donate $50,000 to those affected.
